Tough season ends for Lady Warriors

February 6, 2012

The Big Pine Lady Warriors ended a rough season Saturday night with a 52-40 loss to the Hi-Lo League-leading Baker Braves.
The Warriors have been in every league game this season, but have had difficulty maintaining momentum through all four quarters.
The loss of Alicia Peterson to injury reduced the team to six players.
“I’m proud of the way we played this game and others throughout the season,” said coach Dave Mettam. “This team’s character is to never quit in the face of adversity. They played tough, with class and good sportsmanship.”

“We’re coming together at the right time,” said coach Darrin Chirrick. “The kids knew what they wanted (the league championship) and they’ve been relentless. They’ve worked hard and given an incredible effort. I’m happy for them.”

The Bishop Broncos’ soccer team made it to the semifinals at the Palmdale Classic Tournament held at the Lancaster National Soccer Center, Dec. 2-3.
Bishop beat out their High Desert League nemesis, the Rosamond Roadrunners, in the quarterfinals on a sudden-death penalty kick.
Soccer coach John McGurke chose the Palmdale tourney specifically to test the Div. 6 Broncos against stiff competition from larger schools.
The Broncos’ first match, against Div. 5 Maranatha High from Pasadena, ended in a 1-1 tie.

Warriors nose out Huskies

December 7, 2011

The Big Pine Warriors basketball squad lived up to its name Monday night in a down-to-the-wire, 42-39 win over the Mammoth Huskies.
Big Pine went 3 points ahead of Mammoth off two free throws from Ryan Carrington. With eight seconds left in the game and three Huskies capable of hitting 3-pointers, the Warriors’ defense held the line.
What made the win that much sweeter is the fact Big Pine had just enough athletes to take the court, 5, competing against the 9-man Mammoth team.
“We started slow,” said coach Darren Chirrick. “We didn’t play very aggressively to keep out of foul problems.”
