Eagles fall to Bobcats

April 2, 2012

Friday afternoon was not a bright spot for Lone Pine Golden Eagles’ fans.
The Boron Lady Bobcats leveled the Lady Eagles softball team 3-14. The baseball match-up wasn’t much better with a 9-15 loss for Lone Pine.
The combination of strong Boron teams and errors from Lone Pine was fatal.
“Our offense was good,” said baseball coach Chris Riesen, “we just have to work on our pitching and defense. We’re a competitive team but not an overpowering team. We can’t make mistakes. We had too many walks and too many errors.”

Bishop golfers dominate HDL

April 2, 2012

Despite strong winds and tough terrain, the Bishop Broncos golf team came away from Desert High’s home course with a win.
Brendon Shibley medaled with a 79, followed by Raimundo Huarte in second with an 82.
Bishop’s team score, 423, was 95 strokes below second-place Kern Valley and 101 strokes below host Desert.
“Conditions were windy,” said coach Shirley Ono, “with tough pin placements and sloping greens. Short or spinning approach shots onto the many elevated greens were unforgiving and punitive.
“The Broncos played well and displayed smart shot-making given the conditions.”

Tigers top Broncos

April 2, 2012

The Bishop JV softball team took on the Lee Vining varsity Lady Tigers last Thursday in a lop-sided 0-10 loss.
“We had to adjust our defense and offense due to injuries and illnesses,” said coach Patty Cummings. The timing couldn’t have been worse as Lee Vining always fields strong teams.
“Tailer Marks did a great job at shortstop as did Tiarney Andreas at catcher and Tamia Shoshone on the mound,” Cummings said.
Shoshone struck out six, had two walks; the Broncos defense committed four errors.

Lady Broncos JV split games with Burroughs

March 28, 2012

The Bishop Lady Broncos JV softball team scored a 9-2 win over Burroughs at Ridgecrest Saturday, ending the day with a loss in game two.
“The girls played the best I’ve seen them play so far,” said coach Patty Cummings. “The umpire even commented on how great the first game was for both teams.”
Shelby Logan started Bishop’s scoring drive in the first inning with a single. Sacrifice flies by Mariah Brooks and Korina Toledo moved Logan into scoring position and Tiarney Andreas’ single brought her home.

First loss at home for Jacks

March 28, 2012

Belmont Shore Rugby Club came to Bishop last Saturday for its first match with the Jacks and left town with a 62-12 victory.
Belmont’s win assures the Long Beach team first place in the North section of Division IV of the Southern California Rugby Football Union.
The more experienced Belmont team scored three times in the first 21 minutes of play, most of the damage inflicted by their powerful number 8 who slashed through the Jacks’ defense with tackle-breaking runs.

Lady Broncos go 7-3 in pre-league

March 26, 2012

The Bishop Lady Broncos logged an 11-3 win over Vasquez Saturday at the Lancaster Tournament and a 10-0 shutout of Louisville in an impromptu scrimmage.
The Broncos got to Lancaster two hours before their first scheduled game against Vasquez to find that their second opponent, Desert Christian, was a no show, leaving the Louisville Royals from Woodland Hills idle.
Bishop volunteered to play Louisville in a scrimmage format, then donated pitcher Megan Erwin when the Royals’ pitcher suffered arm problems during warm up. Erwin and Kellie Tiner rotated between teams for six innings of play.

Broncos split doubleheader

March 26, 2012

When is a split doubleheader a good thing? When it’s the Bishop Broncos baseball team up against the Burroughs Burros in Ridgecrest.
Bishop beat Burroughs Saturday 3-1, then lost the second game 0-1 in what is usually a humbling test for the Broncos in pre-league.
“This is the best we’ve played all season,” said coach Tim Reid.
Curran Simpson saved the win with a diving out at second base.
“Keith Tatum (Bronco’s catcher) had an awesome game one,” said Reid, “not only on his calls to Scott but he threw two outs on stolen base attempts.”
