The Big Pine Lady Warriors hosted Lee Vining Thursday and sent the Tigers’ volleyball squad back up the hill with a 3-0 sweep.
In game one Melissa Barlow executed a kill, putting Sienna Gutierrez at the service line. The score was 3-2 and Gutierrez went on a 6-point run.
Lee Vining couldn’t close the gap after Gutierrez’s serve, only getting a couple of point breaks from Mackenzie Kendall and Marie Lightner. Big Pine’s Anah-Kee Mason and Gena Lewis had multi-point runs at the line. Mason ran up 5 service points and Lewis added 6. The final score in game one: 25-11

Although the Bishop Lady Broncos and Kern Valley Lady Broncs are equal in name, the Broncos’ volleyball squad proved to be the superior team as they scored a sweeping victory on home court Thursday afternoon.
The weather was perfect, Tungsten City Hills were impressive and the Bishop Broncos Cross Country teams couldn’t have hoped for a better outcome as they held their first High Desert League home meet Wednesday afternoon. Both the boys and girls teams scored perfect 15s.
The Boron Bobcats headed to Lone Pine Thursday afternoon and left with their collective tails tucked between their legs. The Lady Golden Eagles volleyball team beat the Bobcats 3-1.
“We used a balanced attacking game and scrappy defense to keep the upper hand,” said coach Mel Joseph. “We played with determination in games one and two.” Lone Pine won the first two sets, 25-18 and 25-21.
The Eagles fell back on their heels in game three, losing to the Bobcats 19-25.
In a game of five rapid sets, Bishop’s Lady Broncos volleyball squad fought hard against Frazier Mountain to earn the victory in the tie-breaker.
Though it’s still early in High Desert League action, the win over the Frazier Falcons was a near-necessity in the Broncos run for the league championship.
Game one was a reflection of the entire match. Neither team enjoyed more than a 3-point advantage through to the 23-25 win for the Falcons. For every points run from the Broncos, the Falcons answered with heavy fortification at the net.
The Bishop Broncos football team can clear the slate and start from scratch tomorrow night at Cal City. It’s the first High Desert League game of the season and Bishop’s 0-0. The team’s 2013 pre-league season has been a rough one.
The Broncos faced off against the Desert Scorpions last Friday night on the road in what certainly qualifies as the hardest-fought game of the year.
The Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles traveled to Mammoth to take on the Lady Huskies (ranked number 3 CIF Division V-AA) Tuesday afternoon and were defeated 9-25, 15-25, 17-25.
Unlike last Friday’s team effort, the Lady Eagles were never able to find their rhythm and passed out of system. “We had no offensive production and defensively did not play with intensity,” said coach Mel Joseph.
