The Fourth Annual Ultimate Cowboy Trail Challenge enjoyed much improved weather this year but sunshine did not diminish the challenging nature of the course.
Horses, mules and donkeys competed in the event put on the weekend of Oct. 8-9 by Linda Laird of the Double L in Bishop and Kris Keeler of JKK Performance out of San Dimas.
Of the top 10 riders, six were locals.
Jay Joseph from Santa Barbara took the championship on his 7-year-old Belgium cross gelding Stout, with a near-perfect ride.
Joseph won $1,000, a hand-crafted photo album, bridle, trophy and the coveted blue ribbon.

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles volleyball squad got bitten by the Boron Bobcats at home Thursday, losing 1-3 (8-25, 25-23, 21-25, 19-25)
âBoronâs strong serving and stingy defense kept us rattled throughout the match,â said coach Mel Joseph. âWe lacked the inspiration and desire to push points when the opportunity was there. Everyone had moments of greatness, just not at the same time and Boron took at advantage.â
Lone Pine served 95 percent as a team.

LAKE SABRINA
Canât seem to find the words to describe the scenery at Lake Sabrina. The yellows, oranges, reds, golds and greens, all so picturesque, and speaking of picturesque, there were plenty of photographers trying for that one perfect picture. In fact, we do believe there were more picture takers on the dam than fishermen. That might be due to the w-i-n-d that was with us all last weekend.
Those fishermen that did brave the w-i-n-d were rewarded by some great catching. Most good fishing is at the Inlets with nightcrawlers, PowerBait, jigs or WoollyBuggers bringing in the fish.

The Bishop Broncos started a tough pre-league football season with a huge bullâs eyes on their jerseys. Who doesnât want to knock off the CIF Southern Section Division Champions?
The only problem: The Broncos of 2011 are young and relatively inexperienced. That showed in Bishopâs 7-42 loss Saturday to the number one ranked Division 12 Sierra Canyon Trailblazers. The schedule doesnât get any easier. In the coming weeks, the Broncos face Chadwick, a team Bishop knocked out of the CIF playoffs 49-20, and Rim of the World in the Broncosâ first home game, Sept. 23.

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles 8-man football squad went 2-0 Friday night in an edge-of-your-seat contest against the Tonopah Muckers.
The Eagles who struggled through a rough 2010 season now stand alone as the one undefeated Owens Valley team early this season.
Lone Pineâs opener was a decisive 42-6 romp over the young, inexperienced Mineral County Serpents. But, nobody could describe the Muckers game as a romp; it was a tough, back-and-forth contest that the Eagles refused to lose, despite a questionable call late in the game.
