Eagles take Bobcats in 5, still undefeated in league

October 18, 2010

A determined Boron Bobcats volleyball team came to Lone Pine Thursday afternoon, out for Eagle blood. It didn’t happen.
The Eagles and Bobcats traded games through nearly two hours of gruelling play, but Lone Pine polished off the tie-breaker, 15-13 and remains undefeated in the top spot in Desert Mountain League play.
“We usually go five games against Boron,” said coach Mel Joseph. “They have a good program and great defensive instincts.
“Boron was scrappy and did not let too many balls hit the floor. They were aggressive from the service line.”

October 14, 2010

The Lone Pine Lady Eagles came away from Mammoth Tuesday still undefeated in Desert Mountain League play after a hard-fought three-game sweep.
The winning scores: 25-22, 25-20 and 25-20.
The Lady Eagles are 6-0 in league play – 15-3-2 overall – and are ranked Number 3 in Division 5AA Volleyball.
“This was a huge victory, the match was intense from start to finish, this was a typical Mammoth-Lone Pine battle,” said coach Mel Joseph. “Lone Pine played outstanding defense. We were able to wear them down mentally by getting the best of their hitters in the end.”

BUHS JV falls to Knights

October 14, 2010

The Bishop High Junior Varsity took a 22-13 loss in its last non-league game against the Bishop’s Knights of La Jolla.
The Knights started strong scoring on their opening drive of Friday’s game to lead 6-0.
The Broncos’ offense countered with a balanced drive to take a 7-6 lead. Ryan Devore capped the drive with a 3-yard touchdown run. Chris Frohreich connected on the point after giving the Broncos the halftime lead.
The Knights recorded 2 TDs in the third quarter, one on a Broncos turnover, grabbing a 22-7 lead.

Warriors fall to Tigers

October 14, 2010

The Big Pine Warriors volleyball team lost a hard-fought, homecourt battle against the feisty Lee Vining Tigers Tuesday. The Tigers took three of four games but the winning margin in each was no greater than 5 points.
“We were pretty good,” said coach Angie Argyle, “but we could have done better. We’re having trouble finishing matches. We beat Lee Vining in tournament play and should have been able to beat them in league play.”
The Warriors are now 2-4 in league play and 4-6 overall.

Knights hand Broncos first loss of season

October 12, 2010

Bishop High’s undefeated season came to an end Friday night as the Bishop’s Knights checkmated the Broncos in La Jolla. The final score: 10-21.
“We didn’t play that well,” said coach Bill Egan. “They just had a better team. The Knights weren’t any bigger, they weren’t any more physical. We just got out-blocked and out-tackled.”
The Broncos were in the game to the end and played a closer contest than the score reflected. “We weren’t dominated,” said Egan. “If we’d had some breaks go differently, we could’ve won it.”

BP Warriors beat Trona by 1 in OT

October 12, 2010

The Big Pine Warriors held on in nail-biting overtime against the Trona Tornadoes Friday night to stay undefeated at 5-0 for the season.
The Warriors pulled ahead in the final seconds for the 35-34 win, redeeming Big Pine after last year’s loss to Trona in the last play of the game.
“This is a game the boys will never forget,” said coach Mark Tillemans. “We really went through all the extremes of high and low.
“It was a real character-builder. We learned a lot of lessons. We can’t come out flat, we have to play four quarters.”

Broncos lose tough match to Ravens

October 7, 2010

Bishop’s Lady Broncos played tough Tuesday in volleyball action against the California City Ravens but fell 0-3.
The first two games were nail biters at 22-25 and 24-26. “Our girls played great,” said coach Sheri Sonke. “The games were exciting and the team is starting to gain confidence and really play well together.”
The Ravens scored 11 straight unanswered points in the final game before the Broncos rallied. Bishop came back to a close 15-20 but the early deficit was too much to overcome.

Broncos tennis braves the elements and MHS

October 7, 2010

Tuesday’s thunderstorms let up just long enough for a Bishop 10-3 tennis win over Mammoth.
The Broncos and Huskies players, coaches and spectators had to clear the tennis courts of hail stones before the match could begin.
The final sets were still in progress when the dark skies opened up again. By then, the Broncos doubles had already won six out of the 13 sets and the singles had taken three.
Eva Bohg swept her first two sets 6-1 and was ahead 3-2 when the rains came.
Shayna Citrenbaum won 6-1 against Mammoth’s No. 3 seed.

Lone Pine Eagles soar over two Mustang herds

October 7, 2010

The Lone Pine Lady Eagles volleyball squad remains undefeated in League play after a week of clean sweeps against the Vasquez Mustangs and Lucerne Valley Mustangs.
Lone Pine travelled to Acton on Tuesday to take on Desert Mountain League newcomer Vasquez for a key match-up.
The Lady Eagles came away with a hard-fought three-game sweep.
“This was a key DML victory against a talented team,” said coach Mel Joseph. Serving played a critical role as the Lady Eagles served aggressively (96 percent with 12 aces) to keep the Mustangs’ passing game off balance.
