Supes OK $95K in promotional grants

Inyo County approved $95,000 in Community Project Sponsorship Grants last Monday in an effort to support local organizations and the events they host to attract tourists to the area.
The Board of Supervisors approved funding for 15 different community events and projects, ranging from a museum fundraiser to a trout derby.
In all, the county received 18 applications from groups seeking funding through Inyo’s CPSP, requesting a total of $130,410.

Changing lives through photography

Clayton Beck, a photographer and artist from Bishop, has been featured locally and internationally for his fashion shoots, but his main goal is to show people the beauty in themselves.
His work has been featured in Reno Tahoe Tonight magazine, Schön magazine and ISHARYA jewelry. His latest achievement was the advertisement for the Fantasies in Chocolate campaign at the Grand Sierra Resort and Spa in Reno, Nev. The 2014 campaign was shot by Beck featuring his line, Clayton Beck Creative.

For many Americans this year, their turkey won’t have had a chance to settle in their stomachs before they begin their holiday shopping rush.
Retailers across the country will be open for business tonight as part of a growing and controversial trend that’s seeing holiday shopping promotions infringe on the actual holidays themselves.
But even as recent as three years ago, shoppers had to wait until Friday, and a new study suggests wait or no wait, Black Friday might not be worth the hassle after all.

Fire claims boy’s life

A fast-moving fire swept through a home in Bishop this weekend, claiming the life of an 11-year-old boy in the process.
The death has left a community heartbroken and reeling from both the loss and the tragic manner in which Matthew Duane Hanson died early Saturday morning.

Correctional officer suspected of embezzlement

An Inyo County correctional officer has been put on administrative leave following the discovery of alleged embezzlement at Inyo County Jail.
According to the Sheriff’s Department, an internal audit of the jail’s Criminal Welfare began earlier this month, and found that as much as $13,000 is missing from the fund. The inmate welfare fund includes revenue generated from inmate commissary and inmate phone services.

New Miss Bishop Paiute Tribe crowned

The Bishop Paiute Tribe has crowned Kaleena Stone as its 2014-15 Miss Bishop Paiute Tribe.
The tribe held its 21st Annual Miss Bishop Paiute Tribe Pageant Saturday, Nov. 15 at the Paiute Shoshone Cultural Center in Bishop. More than 60 residents and visitors were in attendance to see the two contestants, Stone, 16, and Early Rain Watterson, 16, vying for the honors.

Supes asked to delay Trails decision

A citizen group in Bishop called Save Our Streets is voicing concern that the proposed dual-use route system known as Adventure Trails will do more harm than good.
With the Inyo County Board of Supervisors scheduled to hold a public hearing on Tuesday, Dec. 2 and possibly rule on the Adventure Trails Environmental Impact Report, SOS is eager to make its objections known.

Wanted man arrested after three-hour standoff

A fugitive on the run from Inyo County law enforcement since late October was taken into custody this week after a three-hour standoff with local authorities.
Richard Farrell Andreas Jr., 32, was arrested Thursday afternoon following what the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department describes as “extensive negotiation efforts” with the wanted felon as he hid in a Lone Pine residence.
