Building character, enhancing self-confidence and learning successful people skills are paramount aims of Owen Valley’s brand new beauty pageants for teenage girls and young women.
Former beauty pageant contestant and model Kristina Roberts said she received official approval last month from City of Bishop and Parks and Recreation Commission to establish the first-ever Miss Teen City of Bishop Pageant for 14- to 19-year-olds and Miss City of Bishop for young ladies 20- to 29-year-olds.

Hospital Board discusses finances, future direction

Last month’s Northern Inyo Local Hospital District meeting revealed that Northern Inyo Hospital is financially stable with strong assets, clear accounts and ongoing plans for a secure future.
At the regular meeting of the NIH Board of Directors, held Sept. 19, discussions of several loan transactions, new earthquake insurance, employee pensions, funding sources and other agenda items ended on one note: a strong bottom line for Northern Inyo Hospital.

Inyo fire departments open doors to public

Volunteer fire departments throughout the Owens Valley will be celebrating Fire Prevention Week Oct. 7-13 with a series of open houses.
Each department will be inviting residents into the fire house Tuesday or Wednesday to check out firefighters’ equipment, tour the station, meet the volunteer first responders and enjoy a barbecue.

Local small schools are thinking big

School districts with larger enrollments talk about the economies of scale: more course offerings, a larger athletic program, more bargaining/purchasing power. But, Owens Valley’s two smallest K-12 districts, Independence’s Owens Valley Unified and Big Pine Unified, are turning their lack of size into an advantage.

Celebrating 100 years of film history

From The Lone Ranger to Transformers, Lone Pine has been a part of film history for more than 100 years and will be celebrating this weekend with the annual Lone Pine Film Festival.
This year’s theme, “Celebrating Centennials,” is an ode to Paramount Pictures and Universal Studios, which are both celebrating their 100th birthdays.

Walk to School Day

The Bishop Police Department is sponsoring the Bishop School District’s annual “Walk to School Day” on Wednesday, to promote healthier habits for the community.
“The schools are encouraging students and parents to walk or ride bicycles to school to promote healthier habits, a cleaner environment, safety, community benefits and because its fun,” a press release from the PD states.

Candidates discuss 4th District issues

About four dozen local residents attended the Fourth District County Supervisor candidates’ forum hosted by the Big Pine Civic Club last Monday, Sept. 24, at the Big Pine Town Hall. Civic Club President Rick Fields welcomed everyone and introduced the two candidates, current Supervisor Marty Fortney and challenger Mark Tillemans.
