Locals hoping to launch dock program

November 3, 2014

Randy Short, a Vietnam combat vet and a member of the California Boating and Waterways Commission, is leading a charge to obtain state money to build fishing docks on a number of local lakes and ponds to improve access for boats, kayaks and float tubes.
Short is working with local volunteers, Inyo County, Mono County and the U.S. Forest Service to identify which bodies of water should have a dock added.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is looking into the program to decide if it wants to get involved, according to Short.

Earth to Sky club claims another ‘first’

Earth to Sky Calculus, a student science group, recently set a record by eclipsing all former methods used to photograph the phases of a solar eclipse.        
During the Oct. 23 partial eclipse of the sun, members of the student-directed group captured 11 images of the crescent sun taken from a suborbital helium balloon. The photo series was taken “in a way that’s never been done before,” said Earth to Sky mentor Dr. Tony Phillips.

REGPA almost out for public review

Inyo County Planning is nearing completion of its Renewable Energy General Plan Update Environmental Impact Report as work continues on other General Plan updates.
Planning Director Josh Hart explained that the General Plan, which experienced a major overhaul in 2001, is a “living, breathing document” that is subject to regular amendments to ensure the county’s guiding document for land-use planning is up-to-date with the changing world.

LADWP, Inyo consider part 2 of pumping plan

The Inyo County-L.A. Technical Group met Thursday afternoon to go over the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s conservative pumping plan for the next six months. The group, staff from LADWP and the Inyo County Water Department, will reconvene in late November, in time to dot the i’s and cross the t’s before the December Standing Committee meeting.

Inyo Office of Education agrees to pay LP legal fees

The final shoe has dropped in the legal issues between the Lone Pine Unified School District and the Inyo County Office of Education. According to LPUSD Board President Le Roy Kritz, the district’s law firm has received acknowledgement that Lone Pine’s legal fees will be covered by the county office.
