Bishop school board candidates speak

Residents who attended Wednesday evening’s forum for five candidates vying for three seats on the Bishop Unified School District Board of Trustees may have a harder time deciding how to cast their votes Nov. 4 than they would have before the forum.
While the five candidates’ backgrounds vary, the consensus of a small sampling of those in attendance was that all five made their case effectively and convincingly.

Local landscape stars in new feature film

It takes strength, ingenuity, courage and determination to scale a 1,000-foot “headwall” in our mountains to save a fallen climber’s life. The same might be said for filming a feature in these enormously challenging locations in our mountains on a “micro-budget.”

School board candidates discuss the issues in Round Valley

Tuesday evening’s candidates’ forum at the Round Valley Elementary School, sponsored by the Sunrise Rotary Club of Bishop and The Inyo Register, featured three candidates vying to fill two seats on the Board of Trustees which are opening in November.
Round Valley has a three-person Board of Trustees currently composed of Joe Griego, Howard Arcularius, and Stacy Sparrow. Trustees Griego and Arcularius opted not to run for re-election.
Stepping up to fill the vacancies are Jeff Perry, Shawn Ray and Eduardo Sandoval.

Supes not crazy about cuckoo listing

The Inyo County Board of Supervisors raised concerns Tuesday about the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s announcement that it has listed the yellow-billed cuckoo as a threatened species under the Endangered Species Act.

Airtanker crashes, killing pilot

Last night, Tuesday, Oct. 7, emergency personnel were able to access the crash site of a CalFire airtanker that had crashed near Yosemite National Park and determined that the pilot on board had died.
The CalFire airtanker (Tanker 81) based out of the Hollister Air Attack Base had been fighting the Dog Rock Fire near El Portal when officials lost contact with it late this afternoon.
The pilot’s family has requested we withhold release of the pilot’s name until all immediate family can be notified.

City Administrator off to a good start after one month in the office

At the end of his first month in office, Bishop City Administrator Jim Tatum talked about what is on his plate now, how he might use his years of management and finance experience to lead the city and his plans for the city’s future.
“This is a job that I’ve wanted to hold for a long time. To have it and to work with city staff and City Council has exceeded my expectations – to have the opportunity to impact my hometown and to work in the building where I went to kindergarten.”

Arts Council celebrates local artists

The Inyo Council for the Arts will be opening its gallery for a reception this Friday to welcome three local artists being celebrated as part of its Featured Artists series.
David Kirk, Gail Camic-Smith and Nigel Smith, each local artists with diverse backgrounds and styles, will have their works on display in the ICA gallery from Oct. 6 through Nov. 14.
The ICA has scheduled a reception to commemorate the show to be held from 6:30-8 p.m. Friday Oct. 10 at 137 S. Main St., Bishop.
