Lubken Ranch a vital link to valley history

The people crowded around the stout loading chute at the Lubken Ranch were bundled up against the morning wind in a colorful assortment of winter gear, from cowboy hats and canvas Carhartt coats to wool beanies and Patagonia down jackets.
“I was hoping for a little better day. It’s a bit blustery,” said Scott Kemp, which made some in the crowd wonder what the local rancher might consider “windy.”

Playhouse 395’s ‘Oklahoma!’ stampedes into Bishop

Residents are invited to grab their cowboy hats and boots as Playhouse 395’s production of the Rogers and Hammerstein blockbuster musical “Oklahoma!” stampedes into the historic Bishop Union High School Theater this March with cowboys, cowgirls and farmers kicking up a song and dance storm.
The local cast, led by real-life couple Jenn and Eddie Davis as Laurey and Curly, kicked off rehearsal right after New Year’s for the Playhouse 395 spring show.

LADWP begins new phase of dust control mitigation

The dirt is starting to fly on the Owens Dry Lake as construction starts on the next phase of dust control work on the massive lakebed.
Barnard Construction has been awarded a $208 million contract by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for Phase 7a of the dust mitigation work on the lake. The company has been the primary contractor on the lake since the dust mitigation work began more than a decade ago.

Bishop joins Healthy Eating, Active Living movement

Bishop has joined the statewide HEAL movement in an effort to raise awareness about obesity and combat the epidemic with fun, family-friendly activities and policies.
Through HEAL, the Healthy Eating and Active Living campaign, cities all across California have been working together to share ideas about how to promote healthier communities.

INF defines ‘desired conditions’ for revision

There was an overflow crowd at last week’s public workshop at the Forest Service building in Bishop with 70 in attendance, eager to provide feedback on the latest iteration of the Inyo Forest Plan Revision.
The document under scrutiny was the preliminary “Need to Change,” which provides the basic direction and policies for the final forest plan slated for completion on Jan. 4, 2016.

Council holds off on plastic bag prohibition decision

A vote to determine whether Bishop joins almost 100 other towns and cities across California in supporting a statewide ban on single-use plastic shopping bags has been postponed a third time.
Just days before the City Council was scheduled to take up the matter at its Monday, Jan. 27 meeting, Senator Alex Padilla (D-Pacoima) announced he was scrapping SB 405 – the legislation city officials were on the fence about supporting – in favor of a new bill that reportedly addresses and resolves the concerns of major business and labor groups.

Preparing young poets

Inyo County’s high school students are among thousands across the state working hard to interpret, memorize and recite classical poetry in preparation for the 2014 county and state finals of Poetry Out Loud, now in its ninth year.
The competition is organized through the California Arts Council and was created with the help of the National Endowment for the Arts to engage high school students in the presentation of poetry through memorization and performance.
