All smoke, no fires for Owens Valley residents

While storm activity has spared the eastern side of the Sierra Nevada for the past week, Owens Valley residents remain impacted by smoke from wildland fires raging on the western slopes.
Between the Windy Peak Fire 21 miles west of Aberdeen and the Fish Fire burning towards the Golden Trout Wilderness Area, Great Basin Air Pollution Control District declared an “unhealthy for sensitive group” advisory at Owens Lake and a “moderate” advisory in Bishop on Saturday. By Sunday, south winds had cleared out the Bishop area but a haze remained in the north end of the valley Monday morning.

PD stays one step ahead of Inyo County’s Grand Jury

Through creativity, renovation and response to previous Inyo County Grand Jury recommendations, the Bishop Police Department has earned very high marks on the 2012-13 Inyo County Grand Jury report card that the BPD received last month.
The Grand Jury’s Oct. 24, 2012 inspection of the BPD, which was led by Police Chief Chris Carter, resulted in the department receiving both several commendations and a few recommendations.

Adventure Trails coming to Inyo

With funding in hand, the Eastern Sierra Adventure Trails Group is entering the final stages of implementing AB 628, the pilot adventure trails program in Inyo County.
Volunteer groups are currently working with the U.S. Forest Service to build information kiosks in and around local ATV recreation sites and a series of public meetings to gather input from residents before final implementation are on the horizon.

Cops recognize ML bank robber

With the aid of social media and concerned citizens, Mammoth Lakes Police officers apprehended 23-year-old bank robbery suspect Ryan Ward, of Bishop.
According to the Mammoth Lakes Police Department, the Mammoth branch of Bank of America was robbed by a male suspect at about 11 a.m. Monday. Officials said the robber presented a note to a bank teller, claiming he had a gun. The teller handed over an undisclosed amount of cash, and was able to trigger the bank’s silent alarm as the perpetrator left the building.
The suspect fled before police arrived at the bank.

Cuts coming to Inyo courts

Inyo County courts are facing drastic cutbacks due to state budget constraints.
Effective Oct. 17, the Bishop and Independence offices of the Superior Court of California will begin reducing hours of service for the public and will be reducing its staff by 40 percent. These cuts are taking place as the State Administrative Offices of the Courts prepares to move forward on a multi-million dollar court construction project in Bishop.

Upcoming concert season to bring new acts to wider audiences

An 11-year-old piano prodigy, a John Denver impersonator and an angelic trio of fiddle-playing siblings are some of the offerings to be presented by the Bishop Community Concerts Association during its upcoming, 67th annual season.
The season runs from October to April, with a total of five concerts planned. While the BCCA has always made outreach to local schools a priority – by arranging for visiting musicians to visit Bishop campuses – those efforts have been expanded in 2013-14 to include students in Mono County.

Agents move in on illegal grow site

Local law enforcement identified and eradicated what they are calling a “massive” marijuana grow operation west of Independence this week, arresting eight individuals believed to be associated with the operation.
Agents with the Inyo Narcotics Enforcement Team and U.S. Forest Service have been investigating the grow site and gathering evidence since May of this year, and moved on the site Thursday, Aug. 22.

Hiker found dead after 30-foot fall

August 23, 2013

FRIDAY, AUG. 23, 2013 – A multiagency search and rescue effort to locate Matthew Mooney, a 47 year old man from Swall Meadows, concluded yesterday late Thursday afternoon when Mooney was located deceased.
According to the Inyo County Sheriff's Department, Search and rescue team members discovered Mooney in a chute above Tamarac Lake; he is believed to have fallen approximately 30 feet.

Former SAR member missing in Rock Creek area

August 21, 2013

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21, 2013 – A multi-agency search and rescue effort was launched at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night after Inyo County Sheriff's dispatch was notified of an overdue hiker.
According to Sheriff's Public Information Officer Carma Roper, 47 year-old Swall Meadows resident Matthew Mooney set out Tuesday for a day hike in the Rock Creek area. Mooney contacted family via cell phone at about noon Tuesday, saying he was returning from Round Valley Peak and would be home in a couple hours. He has not been seen or heard from since.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21, 2013 – For the first time ever, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will be offering live interactive telecasts of its Board of Commissioners meetings in the Owens Valley beginning with the Tuesday, Aug. 27 meeting.
The meeting will be televised at 1:30 p.m. in the LADWP Administrative Office at 300 Mandich St. in Bishop.
