Salvation Army breaks ground

June 17, 2013

MONDAY, JUNE 17, 2013 – Eight months after launching a $1 million capital campaign to construct new, local headquarters, the Salvation Army Bishop Corps is inviting the community to a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of its future facility.
The facility, according to the Salvation Army, will consolidate the Corps’ many county-wide social service endeavors and allow for the expansion of its programs that are currently located in cramped, rented storefronts.

FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 2013 – Before an audience of residents from Bishop, Big Pine, Independence and Lone Pine, as well as dignitaries that included members of the Inyo County Board of Supervisors and Bishop City Council, Dion Agee, publisher of The Inyo Register, prepares to unveil the cover of the 2012 Inyo County Profile magazine featuring the 2012 Inyo County Citizen of the Year.

Attempted-murder suspect tracked down in Bishop

FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 2013 – An investigation into an alleged attempted murder Thursday night resulted in the arrest of Chad Smith, 40, of Wilkerson, at a Bishop residence Friday afternoon.
According to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, authorities received a report of a domestic dispute with shots fired near Collins Road in Wilkerson at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.

EMS Provider of the Year

Fifth District Supervisor Matt Kingsley presents Olancha Cartago Fire Chief Steve Davis with a plaque honoring him as EMS Provider of the Year at the May 21 regular board meeting. Davis joined the Olancah Cartago Fire Department more than 35 years ago and has served as chief since 1989. In 2012 he helped spearhead a successful, ongoing, countywide volunteer recruitment effort.

High school rodeo competition starts today

June 11, 2013

The California High School Rodeo finals first arena competition kicked off Sunday evening with the horsemanship portion of the CHSRA Queen competition.
Rodeo competition starts this morning at 9 a.m. with the official opening performance this evening at 7 p.m.
Bishop students to look for are Kayla Inderbieten and Chase Bowen.

U.S. Forest Service wildland firefighter dies in Northern California

VALLEJO, Calif., JUNE 11 – A 28-year-old firefighter from Susanville, Calif., died Monday afternoon as a result of injuries received on a wildfire on the Modoc National Forest in northeast California. Luke Sheehy was a member of the California Smokejumpers, based out of Redding.

Inaugural bi-county bike ride fundraiser becomes a reality

JUNE 10, 2013 – The Mammoth 2 Bishop Fun Bike Ride and Finish Line Music Festival “isn’t just an exciting new event coming this summer to the beautiful Eastern Sierra.”
According to the Mammoth 2 Bishop website, www.mammoth2bishop.com, the event is also the culmination of organizer and High Sierra Events founder Lloyd Cearley’s five-year dream. Cearley said he has been hoping to offer the unique cycling event since he fell in love with and moved to Mammoth Lakes in 2002-03.

Flora fans invited on upcoming botanical tours

JUNE 10, 2013 – It is once again time for the annual garden tour designed to inspire, awe and educate participants about the amazing garden diversity that is possible in the arid Eastern Sierra climate.
Garden Tour Adventures 2013, a fundraising extravaganza that benefits the Bishop City Park Arboretum Project, will be held from 9 a.m-1 p.m. this Saturday, June 15.

Gregory to leave as ski area top dog

June 6, 2013

Rusty Gregory, the chief executive officer of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, will step aside from his duties, he said Wednesday night.
Speaking at a Town Council meeting on June 5, Gregory said he would make a formal announcement later this month.
“We’ve made a lot of … changes,” Gregory said. “In two to three weeks I’ll be announcing who’s going to run Mammoth Mountain Ski Area next. Mammoth Mountain will not be run by me.”
Gregory did not elaborate on his decision before the council, and afterward declined further comment on his announcement.
