Winter visitor numbers up in Bishop

Just two months in, and it already appears that 2013 may be a promising year on the tourism front.
Bishop Area Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau Director Tawni Thomson told the Bishop City Council Monday that the Visitors Bureau is seeing more walk-in traffic in February and March of 2013 than it did the previous year. She also said that the Chamber of Commerce, which serves a different function than the Visitors Bureau, is in the process of adding one new program and improving its presence on the Internet.

Aid available to local farmers

Federal officials are offering aid to local farmers and ranchers who have lost revenue due to drought conditions.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture has designated three counties and an independent city in Nevada as primary natural disaster areas due to damages and losses caused by drought, as well as five adjacent counties in California, including Inyo.
Farmers and ranchers in the natural disaster area are eligible for financial compensation for their losses.

Salvation Army seeks increase in donations for new facility

An increased demand for help from the needy during the 2012 holiday season has infused a local ministry’s new-facility fundraising and building plans efforts with renewed vigor.
For three-and-a-half years, the Salvation Army has been planning to build a brand-new facility, designed to consolidate all of its programs, and as the corps nears the midway point in its $1 million capitol campaign fundraiser goal, an end may be in sight this year.
