Inyo County District Attorney Art Maillet announced Monday what he calls successful resolutions to three different criminal cases, two of which involved the deaths of residents.
According to Maillet, Bishop resident Harlan Dewey, Jr., 41, pleaded no contest Dec. 7 to felony involuntary manslaughter in connection to the Jan. 13, 2011 death of Daniel Barlow.
Dewey will be sentenced Jan. 11, 2013. Maillet said Dewey is facing a maximum sentence of three years.
Authorities are searching for the driver who crashed into another motorist Tuesday night on Sherwin Grade and then fled the scene.
The other motorist, 57-year-old Charles Baviera of Crowley Lake, suffered moderate injuries when his truck rolled off the highway and down an embankment. According to the California Highway Patrol, Baviera was able to climb out of his truck and walk back up to U.S. 395 where he flagged down a passing motorist for assistance. The driver of the vehicle who caused the collision had driven away, meanwhile.

Local law enforcement officials partnered up with dozens of local youngsters Saturday to help the kids shop for Christmas presents for their families. Law enforcement agencies from virtually every community in the Eastern Sierra, using money from their own Peace Officersâ Associations, provided $200 to each youngster participating in the annual Shop With a Cop event at Kmart in Bishop. The morning kicked off with breakfast at Whiskey Creek in Bishop before the youngsters got to go on a ride-along, with lights and sirens blazing, down Main Street.

New recruits will be fighting a live brush fire in Bishop as part of a training exercised designed to give the volunteers some much-needed experience.
Bishop Fire Chief Ray Seguine said the volunteer fire department is planning to ignite a fire in the vacant lot on the northwest corner of the intersection Yaney and Spruce streets to simulate a wildland fire, something the new recruits will likely experience this spring.
Seguine said a wildland fire experience cannot be simulated at the departmentâs training facility on East Line Street.

As the nation comes to grips with Fridayâs deadly shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., local law enforcement is showing a more visible presence at school campuses.
On Monday, uniformed personnel from the Inyo County Sheriffâs Department, Bishop Police Department and California Highway Patrol were making their presence known as students arrived at and left school campuses from Bishop to Lone Pine.

The public is invited to enjoy a hearty holiday Christmas Day menu, complimented by heaping helpings of caroling and conviviality at the 23rd Annual Community Christmas Dinner, hosted by the United Methodist Social Services Soup Kitchen.
Soup Kitchen Supervisor Laura Smith said everyone is invited to dinner from 12:30-3 p.m. on Christmas Day, Tuesday, Dec. 25 at Bishop United Methodist Church, 205 N. Fowler St. Need is not an issue, she added. âWe just want everyone who wants to come to have the opportunity to be there.â

Each of these colored, paper âbulbsâ represents the Christmas wishes of a local child in need, and because there are still plenty hanging from the 10 Wish Trees located throughout the county (including The Inyo Register, above), Inyo-Mono Advocates for Community Action has extended the deadline to Monday, Dec. 17 in order to give residents additional time to participate in the program. Participants are asked to select a bulb off of any Wish Tree, then do a little Christmas shopping for the youngster and return the new, unwrapped gifts to the IMACA Office, 224 S. Main St. in Bishop, by Monday.

Monitoring of the Lower Owens River Project has given Inyo County, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and residents an insight into how habitats on the project are developing.
Both LADWP and Inyo County Water Department officials said LORP goals were met this past year, despite dry conditions, and, over all, coordinated team-work between the LADPW and Inyo County, as well as consultants, has led to a growing habitat along the river.

Owners of the Cottonwood Plaza in Bishop are looking to the community for input on the future of the shopping center as local contractors continue renovations on the buildings.
After years of legal debates that stalled efforts to re-open the plaza, then the death of an owner earlier this year, the Denman family has gotten the ball rolling on internal improvements intended to bring Cottonwoodâs buildings up to code and attract businesses to the long-vacant complex.

With their squad car lights flashing and sirens wailing, Eastern Sierra law enforcement officers will be rounding up scores of minors this weekend â but these kids arenât delinquents. Rather, the raucous round-up will mark the return of a special day of holiday fun for the officers and more than 20 lucky youngsters.
Door-to-door service, a hot breakfast, a shopping spree and a snap shot on Santaâs knee are all part of the Second Annual Shop with a Cop event being held this Saturday, Dec. 15 in Bishop.
