Be careful with last-minute gifts

According to National Retail Federation, gift cards have been the most-requested gift for five years running. However, consumers are strongly advised before purchasing these cards to check for front- and back-end, inactivity and transaction fees and expiration dates that can end up costing their recipients or even render them useless. Inyo, BrightSource at odds over mitigation estimates

County leaders said last week that they support a proposal for a large solar energy plant in southeast Inyo County, but only if the project proponent can guarantee that it won’t cost the county.
BrightSource Energy is proposing to build two 250-megawatt solar thermal power plants on a 5.1 square-mile site in the area north of Old Spanish Trail Highway, just west of the Nevada border in Charleston View.

D.A. closes three cases

Inyo County District Attorney Art Maillet announced Monday what he calls successful resolutions to three different criminal cases, two of which involved the deaths of residents.
According to Maillet, Bishop resident Harlan Dewey, Jr., 41, pleaded no contest Dec. 7 to felony involuntary manslaughter in connection to the Jan. 13, 2011 death of Daniel Barlow.
Dewey will be sentenced Jan. 11, 2013. Maillet said Dewey is facing a maximum sentence of three years.

Driver hurt in hit-and-run

Authorities are searching for the driver who crashed into another motorist Tuesday night on Sherwin Grade and then fled the scene.
The other motorist, 57-year-old Charles Baviera of Crowley Lake, suffered moderate injuries when his truck rolled off the highway and down an embankment. According to the California Highway Patrol, Baviera was able to climb out of his truck and walk back up to U.S. 395 where he flagged down a passing motorist for assistance. The driver of the vehicle who caused the collision had driven away, meanwhile.
