Local authorities are continuing a search for a missing hiker from Pacific Palisades who has been in the backcountry for more than 10 days.
Authorities launched a massive search effort last Wednesday after the hiker failed to return from a planned three-day hike in the Inyo National Forest.

An effort is under way to remove fear about and break down barriers surrounding annual mammogram breast cancer screenings. As part of that effort, local women are being given financial and informational support to educate and encourage them to be proactive on behalf of their own health care and even to save their own lives.

Bishop leaders recently gave the go-ahead on two park-related issues and cleared up some wording in an ordinance dealing with the appointment of City Council members.
In light of Councilmember Jeff Griffithâs election to the Inyo County Board of Supervisors, which will take affect in January, city leaders met Monday to discuss guidelines for filling City Council vacancies.
The council unanimously approved an ordinance that will update the city code regarding council appointments.

Local high school students are joining their peers nation-wide in polishing recitation and life skills as they prepare for the 2012-13 Poetry Out Loud competition, where contestants stand to win prizes in the thousands of dollars.
âPoetry Out Loud national recitation contest introduces high school students to the magic of great poetry,â states the POL website, www.poetryoutloud.org.

Inyo Countyâs Grand Jury met with Clerk-Recorder Kammie Foote earlier this year to take a close look at Local Agency Formation Commission special districts.
In her response to the Grand Jury, Foote said that many of the recommendations that were made are beyond the countyâs authority, as it does not have jurisdiction over entities such as school and hospital districts.

With two weeks before the Nov. 6 General Election, the Bishop Unified School District approved a resolution in support of Proposition 30. The vote was a unanimous 5-0 at the districtâs Oct. 18 board meeting.

A recent evaluation of county-owned water systems has local leaders looking for funds for repairs and a long-term solution to maintenance problems.
Interim Public Works Director Doug Wilson told the Board of Supervisors last week that the countyâs three water systems â in Lone Pine, Independence and Laws â are in decent working order, but all three require costly improvements.
