A piece of land â a view, a vital migration path, a home â will be preserved as such forever. Bob and Lee Naylon have basically sold their development rights on their 104 acres in Swall Meadows to the Eastern Sierra Land Trust. Known as a conservation easement, the deal ensures that no matter who owns the land in the future, there can never be any development on the property.
The easement is a unique opportunity for the land owners to retain ownership and management responsibilities for their land while designating how the land will be used now and in the future, according to ESLT.

Superior Court Judge Brian Lamb said the money is in hand and preliminary work for site selection for the new Bishop court facility is in progress.
During a meeting with the Inyo County Board of Supervisors last Monday, Lamb also said the state is nearly ready to begin construction on a new court facility adjacent to Inyo County Jail in Independence. He said work on the Independence facility should begin in the next couple years.

CalFire has completed its final report on the Center Fire in Big Pine and is awaiting a decision by the District Attorneyâs Office before it can be released to the public.
According to CalFire Public Information Officer Bill Peters, âwe are not going to release the report until the District Attorney decides what he wants to do with it.â
The final report on the fire will contain the cost of damages and cause of the blaze, as well as details on fire units that responded to the blaze.

For the second time in less than a year, the City of Bishop has a new administrator.
The City Council voted unanimously Monday to have Community Services Director Keith Caldwell step into the shoes of recently resigned Jim Southworth â albeit on an interim basis.
However, according to a press release sent out Tuesday morning, Caldwellâs temporary appointment â not to exceed six months â may be used as a trial run to gauge how well heâd handle the job on a permanent basis.

Amid reduced funding and rising fuel and insurance costs, the Eastern Sierra Transit Authority is announcing fare increases and a change to some of its routes. The fares go up Thursday, Sept. 1 and the route changes wonât go into effect until Tuesday, Sept. 6 following the Labor Day holiday.
The popular Nite Rider service in Bishop was spared the axe because the public spoke out to save it.

Local authorities are investigating the circumstances surrounding a Lone Pine womanâs death on Tuesday, not long after failing to return from a morning walk.
According to the Sheriffâs Department, Jenny Salado, 63, was reported missing Tuesday afternoon after failing to meet up with her companion after a âroutine walkâ near the Narrow Gauge Road area northeast of Lone Pine.
Members of Inyo County Search and Rescue reportedly located Saladoâs body at about 9:30 p.m. Tuesday evening near the Narrow Gauge Road area where she had reportedly been bottle hunting.

While preparing to climb the north face of Half Dome, two local climbers witnessed a man fall down the 2,000-foot precipice Monday evening.
According to a press release from Yosemite National Park, Ryan Leeder, 23, of Los Gatos, fell to his death at approximately 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22. The cause is still under investigation.
Yosemite Emergency Communication Center received a call of a person falling off the face of Half Dome, but due to the late hour, Yosemite National Park Rangers were unable to initiate search efforts Monday night, according to the press release.

In the decade since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11 2001, wars are still being fought â one the longest in U.S. history â at a cost of trillions of dollars and thousands dead.
The community of Big Pine will be holding a day of remembrance for those who perished on 9/11 in the armed conflicts since, as well as to give thanks to those who stepped up during the townâs catastrophic Center Fire. The event at Mendenhall Park starts at 6 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 11.

Under the threat of a lawsuit, Inyo County was forced to repeal a General Plan Amendment identifying suitable areas for renewable energy projects Tuesday.
Upon hearing of the General Plan amendment, the Sierra Club and Center for Biological Diversity filed a lawsuit against the county, claiming that an Environmental Impact Report is necessary before the county can include preferred sites for renewable energy development in the General Plan.

Workers for the local Vons stores, along with 62,000 other employees, voted by a 90 percent margin this week to strike if contract demands are not met. Negotiations between the workersâ union and Safeway â Vonsâ parent corporation â have been ongoing since March when the current contract expired.
Negotiations between union workers at Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons and their parent companies will begin Aug. 29 with a federal mediator.
