Millpond 2014 kicks off Friday night

The 23rd Annual Millpond Music Festival comes to Bishop Friday evening, kicking off a weekend that promises an incredible line-up of Grammy-nominated musicians, up-close time with the performers in the Workshop Tent, great food and handcrafted art from local skilled artisans – all in the magical, Eastern Sierra venue known as Millpond.
Over the past weeks, Millpond performers have been highlighted, giving local readers a brief glimpse of what to expect, music-wise, this year at Millpond. Here are three more talented performers taking the stage this weekend …

City honors Lions Club

Bishop Lions Club was recently recognized for the myriad ways in which it continues to enrich the community by giving of its time, service, sponsorship and donations.
Lions Club member Stephen Winzenread accepted the Quarterly Citizens Award on behalf of the service organization at the Sept. 8 City Council meeting.
Councilman Dave Stottlemyre began the presentation, saying, “By no means is this list of activities that the Lions Club have done over the year complete; not even close.”

BREAKING: June Fire prompts evacuations, highway closure

WEDNESDAY – A 50-acre fire near June Lake erupted Tuesday afternoon, threatening structures at the June Lake ski area, and promoting evacuations and a closure of State Route 158.
The June Fire started at the base of June Mountain and, as of Wednesday morning, was zero percent contained.
According to officials, fire behavior includes torching, spotting, and active runs.

Broncos muzzle Huskies

The Bishop Broncos football team and the crowd were up for the first home game of the season Friday night – the traditional match-up with the Mammoth Huskies.
One has to choose one’s words tactfully. There are strong friendships and a lot of history between the two schools. As Bronco coach Bill Egan said, “I’m great friends with the Mammoth coaches; I root for them every week, except for this one game.”
But, sorry guys, the Broncos wiped up the field with the Huskies. Bishop shut out Mammoth, 50-0.

Lady Broncos: 1st at Mammoth Tourney

The Bishop Lady Broncos headed to Mammoth for the annual volleyball tournament last Friday and came home with the tournament championship.
“I’m happy for the program,” said coach Linda Frigerio, “happy for the team. It’s nice to see us getting better and better.” Over the past three years, the Broncos have progressed from third place at the tourney, to second with last year’s team and now they’ve claimed the title. The final matches were played back to back against the Yosemite High School Badgers.

1957-2014

Maureen Mary Cardenas was born July 30, 1957 in Bishop and passed away Aug. 31, 2014 at the Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop where she was undergoing emergency treatment for multiple health reasons. She was the youngest of nine children born to Connie Mack and Rosalind Marie Denver of Bishop.

Get ready to 'Explore Your Universe'

It’s that time of year again. Fall is on its way, and its impending arrival marks the return of the popular “Explore Your Universe” lecture series, featuring talks by prominent astronomers sharing their research and discoveries.
The Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Cerro Coso Community College invite the public to attend their first installment of the 2014 edition at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Sept. 18, when Dr. Christopher Greer from the University of Arizona gives a talk titled “Imaging a Black Hole: From the Owens Valley to the South Pole.”
