Mark Hunter McFarland
1962-2014

Mark Hunter McFarland, resident of Bishop, born April 7, 1962 in Long Beach, passed away at his home in Bishop on April 16, 2014. Mark moved to Bishop with his family in 1971. He graduated from Bishop Union High School in 1980. He attended West Hills College in Coalinga and returned to Bishop in 1982. Mark worked for Value Sports in Bishop.
He was preceded in death by his father, William McFarland.
Survived by his mother, Geraldine McFarland of Bishop; and brother, Mike McFarland of Las Vegas, Nev.

Embezzlement suspect ID’d

Local authorities have completed an investigation into the embezzlement of hundreds of thousands of dollars from a local business and have recommended that the U.S. Attorney General’s Office file charges.
The PD has recommended that multiple counts of burglary, grand theft, embezzlement, concealing stolen property, forgery, and making false record entries be filed against Dolores Kay “Lola” Marsh, a former employee of Inyo-Mono Body Shop. The PD has also requested that the charges be filed in Inyo County Court.

Fire burns 113 acres outside of Bishop

A fire, believed to be caused by an abandoned campfire, scorched 113 acres northeast of Bishop over the weekend.
The call came into CalFire dispatch just before 4 p.m. Saturday, April 19. The fire started near 5 Bridges Road, north of U.S. Highway 6.
According to the CalFire information office, 20 fire engines, two fire crews, two bulldozers as well as two air tankers responded to the fire.

Residents give LADWP earful

Inyo residents had an opportunity to respond to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s Solar Ranch proposal at Tuesday’s Inyo County Board of Supervisors meeting.
Representatives of the LADWP met with the Board of Supervisors to discuss the necessity for an industrial-scale solar facility in the Owens Valley and local residents responded, saying simply and clearly that the project is not wanted.

Blaze burns north of Bishop

April 19, 2014

SATURDAY, APRIL 19 - A fire near the Owens River north of Bishop broke out late Saturday afternoon, prompting a closure of Five Bridges Road.
As of Saturday evening, the fire was not threatening structures, but fire officials did call in air tankers to battle the blaze from the sky.

Blackrock dispute still unresolved

Tuesday’s meeting of the Technical Group was eerily similar to the preceding Friday’s meeting.
With the Blackrock 94 dispute still on the table, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power and Inyo County Water Department staff remain in disagreement over the cause and significance of the degradation of vegetation in the 330-acre parcel. Blackrock will be handed over to the Standing Committee, scheduled to meet in Los Angeles Tuesday, April 22. Friday’s meeting was a procedural requirement of the arbitration process.

Plans to honor Alice Piper going forward

The statue of Alice Piper will be unveiled on June 2, the 90th anniversary of the California Supreme Court case that carries her name, in front of the Big Pine High School.

Melinda Fimbres Ridley
1931-2014

Melinda Fimbres Ridley, age 83, passed away peacefully at her Bishop home on April 11, 2014; after an eight-year battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She was born and raised in Bishop. As an adult, Melinda spent 45 years away from Bishop, living in Los Angeles and Orange counties, where she had worked as an accountant. In 1996, Melinda returned to Bishop for her retirement.
