Debra Lea O’Neal
1954-2014

Debra Lea O’Neal, 59, passed away March 8, 2014 at her home after a long battle with cancer. She was born in Furstenfeldbruck, Germany on Dec. 20, 1954. She graduated from Simi Valley High School and after graduating she headed the Corporate Suggestion Program at Home Savings. She moved to Bishop with her husband Steve in 1991, where they raised their family.

Lifelong Bishop resident Lloyd Edward Knight, 91, passed away peacefully on March 11, 2014, with his loving family by his side. Lloyd was born in Provo, Utah on Dec. 6, 1922 to Frank and Blanche Knight.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 67 years, Myrtle; daughters, Lynette Williamson and husband Bart of Bishop, Debbie Jeffery and husband, George of Oxnard; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Lloyd was loved very deeply by his family and he will be missed greatly.

1923-2014

Richard David “Dick” Finch died March 4, 2014, in Bishop. He was 91.
He was born Jan. 5, 1923, in LaMoure, N.D., to Clarence L. and Bertha Simonson Finch. The family later moved to Bozeman, Mont., where Richard graduated from high school. He received a bachelor’s degree in engineering physics from the University of Montana, and served in the U.S. Navy from 1944-46, including a tour of duty in the Philippines.
He married Kristine Hoverson on Sept. 29, 1945, in Bozeman and they enjoyed 67 happy years together. She died Oct. 1, 2012.

Community gives Lone Pine FFA a big boost

The Lone Pine FFA Blue and Gold Grapes & Grains Western Mixer fundraiser, held at the Lone Pine Film History Museum on Friday, March 7, was a tremendous success, raising close to $20,000 in support of the agriculture students in the Future Farmers of America Program at Lone Pine High School.
The film museum’s director, Bob Sigman, and the museum’s Board of Directors have been very supportive of the FFA over the past few years by allowing them to use the museum as the venue for this very popular annual event.

1965-2014

Sandi passed away unexpectedly, following a long illness, at her home in Big Pine on Feb. 28, 2014. Sandi was an avid outdoor enthusiast who loved camping, hiking, scuba diving and long rides. She enjoyed travel, fine dining, sunsets and piña coladas on the beach at her vacation spot in Mexico. Sandi had many bird feeders on her porch and loved watching the birds return in the spring.

Bunn honored by Air Force

Lynn Bunn of Lone Pine has been selected for the U.S. Air Force’s Honorary Command program to serve as a liaison between local communities and Edwards Airforce Base, which often uses Eastern Sierra airspace for training and other operations.
As Inyo County’s Honorary Commander, Bunn has been paired with Lt. Col. Ryan Osteroos of Edwards Airforce Base’s 412th Operations and Support Squadron. Through the program, Osteroos will be tasked with maintaining open lines of communication with Bunn, who has been invited to participate in a number of events at the base.

Lone Pine FFA irrigation solution on horizon

In what Inyo County Supervisors called “not the best alternative, but a good one,” the board agreed at Tuesday’s meeting to support a negotiated solution to get water to the Lone Pine High School’s FFA farm.

LADWP officials meet with Inyo reps

Top Los Angeles Department of Water and Power officials made a trip to the Owens Valley this week, just days after the Inyo County Board of Supervisors reached out to the utility for an update on the status of its controversial solar project.
But Assistant Director of Power System Planning and Development Michael Webster and Yamen Nanne, an engineer on the solar project, weren’t here to meet with county officials. Rather, they were on a two-day public relations junket filled with meetings with local chambers of commerce, tribes, school officials and National Park Service representatives.
