This weekend, United Methodist Social Services will be hosting its first-ever Celebrating the Abundance of the Owens Valley dinner.
The concept of the celebration is âpeople sharing their surplus with people who need a meal,â event founder and key organizer Reverend Caddy Jackson said. He is asking community members to donate food items to fatten the potluck-style dinner menu. Although the event invite list includes all Soup Kitchen guests, it is free to the general public as well.
In the midst of the ongoing drought, the California Native Plant Society is offering low-water, low-maintenance landscaping possibilities for local homes and businesses.
The offerings will be available at the Bristlecone Chapter of CNPS at its annual native plant sale from 9-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 13 at the White Mountain Research Station, 3000 E. Line St., just two miles east of Main Street.

The community of Lone Pine has left such an impression on British filmmaker John Jessup that heâs returning next month to film a documentary on the Lone Pine Film Festival, local community members and the areaâs relationship with Hollywood over the years.

As the anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. approaches, United Blood Services and a team of local nonprofit groups are preparing for the annual fall blood drive in Bishop.
United Blood Services will host the blood drive from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 9 and Wednesday, Sept. 10, and from 8 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 11.
According to UBS Donor Recruitment Representative Monika Wiegers, the goal is to collect 200 units during this three-day drive.

The 13th annual poker run will kick off with registration from 9-11 a.m. at Elks Park on West Line Street in Bishop. From there, riders head out on the Run, which will take them to Tomâs Place, Convict Lake and June Lake for cards, then back to the Elks Park for music, a barbecue, games and fun.

According to Production Manager James Parker, the team of filmmakers, including Director Diego Contreras and Cinematographer Khalid Mohtaseb, had plans to shoot a full week in Inyo County, with stops on Movie Road in Lone Pine and at Laws Railroad Museum in Bishop.
The U.S. Forest Service has opened a 30-day public scoping period to start the National Environmental Policy Act process for revising forest plans on the Inyo, Sequoia and Sierra National Forests.
The scoping period began Friday, Aug. 29 with the publishing of the Notice of Intent in the Federal Register.
The Inyo County Board of Supervisors and a number of county department heads have accepted the ALS (Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) Ice Bucket Challenge to raise money and awareness in the fight against Lou Gehrigâs Disease.
The challenge was made at Tuesdayâs Board of Supervisors meeting by Fifth District Supervisor Matt Kingsley, who said he has personally witnessed the struggle against ALS as his brother, Phillip, was recently diagnosed with the disease.
