Inyo County is once again teaming up with National Geographic, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy and the Sierra Business Council to educate potential visitors on the region’s many attractions.
To assist in the effort, residents are invited to visit www.sierranevadageotourism.org and nominate their favorite restaurants, trails, attractions and geographic features for inclusion on a map of California.
A French music video starring Melissa N’Konde, an Athropologie Catalog Internet video, a Chevy commercial north of Bishop and a cast and crew from episodic television are some of the most recent film projects working locally.
To help accommodate the continued increase in film traffic, the Inyo Film Commission has begun to search for additional local resources for these productions on location.

Congress recently renewed a tax incentive for private landowners – especially working family farmers and ranchers – who protect their land with a voluntary conservation agreement.
The incentive, which had expired at the end of 2009, helped Eastern Sierra Land Trust work with willing landowners to preserve 635 acres of natural areas between 2006 and 2009.
Some light is being shed on the dark incidents of Christmas Day when two local women were shot to death while visiting in San Luis Obispo County.
Owens Valley residents and sisters Beverly Reilly and Kathy Yeager were murdered Dec. 25 while visiting relatives for the holidays at the historic Santa Margarita Ranch.
The Eastern Sierra unit of the Backcountry Horsemen of California will be holding its annual dinner and fundraiser with musical accompaniment by a band featuring Bishop Police Chief Chris Carter.
The horsemen (and women) are the folks on the mountain trails in early summer clearing away snow and debris, opening the way for every traveler. The unit donates more than $120,000 a year in trail support. The group also offers free equestrian first-aid and packing classes.
Barbara Helen Collins
No funeral services will be held for Barbara Helen Collins.
Born July 9, 1928, Barbara died Dec. 29, 2010 at her home in Fallon, Nev. after a brief illness.
Barbara graduated from Owens Valley High School in Independence where she met and married her husband Jack.

With hopes of generous donations from locals, donation boxes for “Socks and Slippers of Love” will be set up at several locations in Bishop today.
Depending on how well the boxes are filled, many Bishop area senior citizens could be sporting new, warm and cozy footwear for Valentine’s Day.
Sponsored by the Inyo County Superintendent of Schools and its Special Education Department, the fundraiser of sorts is asking for new footwear – men’s and women’s – to brighten the spirits and warm the toes of seniors in the city’s care center facilities for the heart-shaped holiday in February.
