Film Fest featuring full lineup in 2011

It’s “Lights! Cameras! Action!” at the Lone Pine Film Festival as the 22nd edition of the world-famous event rolls into the little Eastern Sierra, high desert town Oct. 7-9.
The themes of this year’s action-packed celebration of films made in Lone Pine, Death Valley and the Eastern Sierra include Roy Rogers’ 100th birthday, the excitement of live stunts and plenty of interactive activities, music and even live performances.
For Festival veterans, there are many new events.

Klondike open 7 days a week this summer

Klondike Lake will be opening to the public this Friday and will remain open seven days a week through Labor Day, Sept. 5.
Access to the lake will be limited and those planning to take boats or jet skis onto the water will still be required to have their vessels inspected for invasive quagga mussels.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power began instituting mandatory quagga mussel inspections on every body of water they own three years ago to ensure that the quagga mussels do not hitchhike their way into Eastern Sierra waters.

Memorial services to be held at a later date for 38-year Bishop and Mammoth Lakes resident Darlene Minnie Benson (Lamfers).
From Belmond, IA, Darlene was born Sept. 5, 1947 and passed away on May 17, 2011 at Bishop Care Center after a battle with cancer. She was 63.

Bishop High students win History Day contest

Two Bishop Union High School seniors will be going to Maryland in June to compete in the National History Day Finals.
Amelia Koske-Phillips won in the exhibit category for her project titled “Mono Lake: Finding Balance Through Debate And Diplomacy.”
Laura Stickells won in the exhibit category for her project titled “The Berlin Wall: From Failed Diplomacy to Diplomatic Evolution.”
The two students won finals in the Senior Division in San Jose among 1,000 fellow student competitors and will advance to the National Finals, June 12-16.

Bishop Care Center sued for alleged neglect

A trial date has been set for a lawsuit against the Bishop Care Center, its parent corporation, Horizon West Healthcare, Inc., and five employees that alleges reckless, neglectful and abusive treatment of a patient.
The trial is scheduled to begin March 9, 2012. Judge Dean Stout will be presiding.
According to a complaint filed in Inyo County Superior Court, the victim, then 77, was admitted to the Bishop Care Center in 2005 after suffering a small stroke.

Memorial services will be held at noon Sunday, May 22 at the Really Good Beef Jerky Store at 508 S. U.S. 395 in Olancha for five-year Ridgecrest resident Jewel Rita Pennington.
Born Aug. 20, 1932 in Detroit, Mich., Jewel died April 6, 2011 at Kindred Hospital in Ontario. She was 78.
Jewel was a Probation Department receptionist for a number of years.
She is survived by her daughter, Ashel Hester of Kennewick, Wash.

David Fred Morris Holmes

A Celebration of Life Service will be held for David Fred Morris Holmes, Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 1 p.m. The service will be held at Bishop Creek Community Church, 251 Sierra St. (behind Starbucks), with Pastor Kelly Larson officiating.
David loved the Owens Valley and spent his final years here. He passed away at Renown Regional Medical Center in Reno, Nev. after a brief illness on Feb. 22, 2011 when his heavenly Father called him home.

Born Dec. 31, 1939 in Big Pine to Pete and Lillian Garner, Terry passed peacefully May 14, 2011 at his home in Canyon Country.

Manuel Rivera

Memorial services for Manuel Rivera will be held at noon on Saturday, May 21 at Mt. Whitney Funeral Home, 220 E. Post St., Lone Pine. Interment will be private.
Manuel was born in Mexico on May 31, 1926 and passed away on May 13, 2011 in Lone Pine.
Manuel lived in Inyo County since the late 1960s, worked at Dolomite and lived in Keeler for more than 30 years. He has many friends in Keeler and Lone Pine, and was a loving father and husband.

Mule Days issues statement regarding EHV-1

In response to concerns from residents and potential Mule Days contestants regarding recent reports of EHV-1 virus, Mule Days officials released this statement.
“The EHV-1 virus has the potential to be deadly to equines if it is left untreated or ignored.
According to the Department of Food and Agriculture, ‘The EHV-1 organism spreads quickly from horse to horse and the neurologic form of the virus can reach high morbidity and mortality rates.’
