After the fishing opener winds down this weekend, the Bishop Paiute Tribe will be celebrating a different kind of piscatorial to-do: the completion of its native fish habitat project.
Funded by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, the Bishop Native Fish Refuge Project has been constructed within the Tribe’s 25-acre conservation area on the Bishop Reservation.

DWP making local leadership transition

New leadership is coming to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power’s Owens Valley operations.
Current Manager of Aqueduct Systems Gene Coufal plans to retire in July and the LADWP announced this week that Jim Yannotta will take up Coufal’s post beginning July 1.
Coufal and Yannotta are currently working together to familiarize the future manager with the aqueduct system, which runs from Lee Vining to the San Fernando Valley.
Yannotta said he is spending three or four work days in the Owens Valley while also handling his duties in Los Angeles.

Our dad, Louis Mark Mannatt, passed away in Southern Inyo Hospital Monday night, April 23, 2012. He was 89, yet still filled with a sense of adventure. Dad was quite a positive figure in the community and was loved very deeply by every family member.

Meet Connie Conway

For the final installment in The Inyo Register’s series of candidate statements, California Assembly District 26 incumbent Connie Conway shares with voters her hopes, goals and plans for the future if re-elected.
Conway is running for re-election against Democrat Jonathon Louis Sosa, a student from Visalia.
Both Conway and Sosa were invited to submit statements. Sosa never responded, despite attempts to contact him by mail, phone and e-mail.

43rd Manzanar Pilgrimage continues the healing

It’s free. It’s open to the public. It’s an enlightening, edifying and entertaining weekend chock-full of special inter-generational activities. It is the 43rd Annual Manzanar Pilgrimage, converging at Manzanar National Historic Site April 27-29 to commemorate “a unique chapter of American history,” said Bruce Embrey, Manzanar Committee co-chair.

County questions L.A.’s latest pumping plan

County leaders are concerned that the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is not being specific enough about how much water it is planning to pump this run-off year.
Each year, the LADWP is required by the Inyo County -Los Angeles Long-Term Water Agreement to complete an annual operations plan and deliver it to the county by April 20 for review.
In this year’s installment, rather than providing specific pumping projections for each of its Owens Valley wellfields, the LADWP provided the county with a range that it may pump, including a minimum and maximum number.

For the penultimate installment in The Inyo Register’s series of candidate statements, the men and women running for the open District 8 seat in the U.S. House of Representatives present their personal biographies, reasons for seeking election and respective platforms.
The field of candidates includes 13 hopefuls. The top two vote-getters in the June 5 Primary will advance to the Nov. 6 General Election for the chance to represent District 8 as a U.S. Congressman.

Mildred Lua Everingham Rye, age 83, a resident of Bishop for 32 years was born Sept. 21, 1928 in Topeka, Kan. and passed away April 18, 2012 at Willow Spring Care Center in Redding with her daughter at her bedside.

Dist. 2 hopefuls face voters at public forum

Candidates for the second supervisorial district of Inyo County gathered Monday evening to share their views on the local economy and their goals for office should they be elected in June.
The candidate’s forum, organized, hosted and moderated by Skandar Reid of, drew approximately 80 residents who were interested in seeing how each of the three candidates would handle the three questions posed to them.
The candidates include incumbent Susan Cash, and challengers Russ Aldridge and Jeff Griffiths.
