Help coming for contractors and vendors

Comments made at a Bishop Chamber of Commerce luncheon have resulted in an effort to improve local business’ chances of landing federal contracts.
The Chamber and Manzanar National Historic Site are hosting a workshop from 10 a.m.-noon Wednesday, Jan. 21 at City Hall in Bishop to help contractors and vendors cut through the red tape involved in applying for government contracts.
Barbara Eschels of the National Park Service will specifically be offering guidance on navigating the federal System for Award Management.

Neil Patrick Harris will host the Academy Awards on February 22 and the list of who will be nominated for an Oscar has been announced. Grand Budapest Hotel and Birdman lead the nominations list with nine each. Meryl Streep nabbed her 19th nomination, and Bradley Cooper earned his third consecutive acting nod. Four Brits were nominated this year in the Best Acting categories, Felicity Jones has been nominated along with fellow British actress Rosamund Pike and Eddie Redmayne and Benedict Cumberbatch.

Born Aug. 20, 1919, Frances M. Wood “Caboose,” died Jan. 7, 2015.
Frances was a beloved mother, grandma and great-grandma. Frances will be deeply missed.
There will be no services held. The family will be celebrating her life every day.

1930-2014

Mary was born in Ursina, Pa. on May 7, 1930 to Harry and Katy Cameron. She passed away at her residence on Dec. 7, 2014.
Mary was 84 years of age. She lived in Lone Pine for more than 37 years. Before moving to Lone Pine, Mary also lived in the South Bay area of Southern California for a number of years. She worked at the Best Western Hotel and the Dow Villa in Lone Pine before she retired.

Fourth year of drought for Sierra?

The Eastern Sierra is in the midst of the worst drought it has seen since the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power began keeping records in the 1930s.
Though January, February and March are the big snow years in the Sierra Nevada, Inyo County Water Director Bob Harrington said this week that conditions are on track to be as dry as last year.
However, Harrington did say there is always hope that the area can see another “Miracle March,” as experienced in 1991, when what was a dismally dry winter turned into a very wet spring.

Who’s who of Inyo off to Death Valley

Inyo County heavyweights are headed to Death Valley this weekend for an annual gathering that brings decision-makers and movers and shakers together over a not-inexpensive three-day period.
More than 100 residents and community leaders from throughout California will be meeting at the Furnace Creek Inn for the 2015 Inyo Associates Death Valley retreat, scheduled for Friday, Jan. 16 through Sunday, Jan. 18.

Ellis back on Bishop City Council

The empty seat on Bishop City Council, vacated by newly elected Inyo County Auditor Dave Stottlemyre, has been filled.
The council voted unanimously Tuesday to appoint former council member Jim Ellis to the seat over fellow candidate and former appointee Keith Glidewell. Both Ellis and Glidewell received support for appointment during public comment.
Candidates for the seat expressed their interest for consideration through letters sent to City Hall following the resignation of Stottlemyre. Ellis and Glidewell were the only two residents who submitted letters of interest.
