Katherine Ellen Caplinger
1932-2012

Katherine Ellen Caplinger, 79, resident of Silver Springs, Nev. for one year, born in Syracuse, N.Y. on Aug. 10, 1932, passed away on March 25, 2012 at her daughter’s residence in Bishop.
A former Bishop resident and former longtime resident of Topaz Ranch Estates, Katherine was a loving wife and mother. She told her children she lived a long, full life.

Lawsuit again targets Sierra’s commercial Wilderness users

Commercial stock packers have found themselves, again, between a rock and hard place.
In response to a lawsuit filed by the High Sierra Hikers Association, the federal court has curtailed permits for commercial stock operators in Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park and that ruling may extend to all commercial uses of designated Wilderness areas within the Park.
“The economic impact would be devastating,” said Craig London of Mt. Whitney Pack Trains and Rock Creek Pack Station. “If packers are shut out of the Park for a year or two, we can’t recover. This is a business, not a hobby.”

Agencies’ concerns haven’t delayed Digital 395 project

Despite environmental concerns being voiced about the Digital 395 broadband project, a spokesperson for the developer said work will be moving forward with little or no delay.
Elizabeth Glazner, communications director for Praxis Associates, said agencies such as the California Department of Fish and Game, Bureau of Land Management and U.S. Forest Service have raised a number of concerns about potential impacts resulting from Digital 395, which aims to construct a 583-mile fiber-optic underground cable network along U.S. 395 from Barstow to Carson City.

Wild Iris seeks to educate public about abuse

Incidents of domestic violence and sexual assault are on the rise and their tidal wave effects hit not only abused victims, but also the perpetrators, their families and communities, and society as a whole.
In response to these escalating social maladies’ associated costs – emotional, physical, psychological and even financial – Wild Iris will be holding a workshop and certified crisis counselor training in coming days to educate the community.

Lady Broncos JV split games with Burroughs

The Bishop Lady Broncos JV softball team scored a 9-2 win over Burroughs at Ridgecrest Saturday, ending the day with a loss in game two.
“The girls played the best I’ve seen them play so far,” said coach Patty Cummings. “The umpire even commented on how great the first game was for both teams.”
Shelby Logan started Bishop’s scoring drive in the first inning with a single. Sacrifice flies by Mariah Brooks and Korina Toledo moved Logan into scoring position and Tiarney Andreas’ single brought her home.

First loss at home for Jacks

Belmont Shore Rugby Club came to Bishop last Saturday for its first match with the Jacks and left town with a 62-12 victory.
Belmont’s win assures the Long Beach team first place in the North section of Division IV of the Southern California Rugby Football Union.
The more experienced Belmont team scored three times in the first 21 minutes of play, most of the damage inflicted by their powerful number 8 who slashed through the Jacks’ defense with tackle-breaking runs.

Local Biathlon medalists

Three Bishop athletes medaled at the Fifth Annual Mammoth Winter Biathlon last Saturday. Anthony Sears (l) placed fourth with 13:22 in the 11- to 12-year-old group; Spencer Reid (c) finished second in the 9- to 10-year-old category with 17:39 and also in the 11- to 12-year age category, Clifton Yarborough finished 5th with 14:20. The Mammoth event is the largest biathlon in North America, combining cross country skiing and rifle shooting. The event was sponsored by the Eastern Sierra Nordic Ski Association.

Milton Chandler Buell, Sr.
1923-2012

Milton Chandler Buell, Sr., resident of Bishop for 13 years, born on June 23, 1923 in East Hartford, Conn., passed away March 22, 2012 at Northern Inyo Hospital. He was 88 years old.
He was preceded in death by wife, Elaine Buell; and sister, Nancy Barnes.
He is survived by his daughter, Judy March of Benton; sons, David Buell of Frazier Park,, Milton Buell, Jr. of Katy, Texas and Robert Buell of Brea; and sister, Janet Helm of S. Windsor, Conn.

1926-2012

Memorial Service for Robert Ronald Behrendt, Jr. will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 31 at Brune Mortuary, 325 W. Elm St. in Bishop.
Born Sept. 28, 1926 in Charleroi, Penn., Robert died March 18, 2012 at Renown Hospital in Reno.
He was educated  at Sherwood Music Conservatory, Chicago, Ill. where he majored in Composition and Arranging. He did his general studies at DePaul University.
