Ruth Carolyn Morefield
1922-2010
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Independence Cemetery for 42-year Lone Pine resident Ruth Carolyn Morefield. The Rev. Erin Maddox McPhee will officiate. Friends and family will gather after the service at Pioneer Memorial Methodist Church.
Born in McCook, Neb. Oct. 28, 1922, Ruth died Nov. 23, 2010 at the Bishop Care Center. She was 88.
Ruth married Warren on Sept. 14, 1942 and they were married for 68 years.

A search for a missing hiker in the Eastern Sierra wilderness came to a grim end this week with the discovery of the Portland, Ore. residentâs body.
Inyo County Search and Rescue recovered the body of 37-year-old Christian Meining Wednesday afternoon near the Mt. Whitney Trail, nearly 24 hours after he was first reported missing.
According to Sheriffâs Department Public Information Officer Carma Roper, search crews were dispatched Monday morning when Meining failed to hike out of the Whitney Portal area Friday morning as scheduled.

Lone Pine residents will be honoring volunteer firefighters this holiday season with a Christmas parade dedicated to local men and women who volunteer to leap from bed, dash from the dinner table or leave their day jobs at the drop of a hat to help anyone in need.
The Lone Pine Christmas Parade is scheduled for 1 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 11 and will feature firefighters from virtually every volunteer fire department in the county, dozens of entries from local citizens and Lone Pine Fire Chief LeRoy Kritz as grand marshal.

âA terrorist bomb has torn apart a water filtration facility in Southern Inyo, injuring approximately 15 Los Angeles Department of Water and Power employees. Volunteer firefighters and emergency medical personnel from Lone Pine and Olancha responded quickly, triaging and transporting every victim from the scene and to medical facilities in Lone Pine in less than 45 minutes.â

Alice Josephine Boothe
1915-2010
Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the East Line Street Cemetery in Bishop for lifelong Owens Valley resident Alice Josephine Boothe. Barbara Crockett will officiate. Visitation will be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at Brune Mortuary in Bishop.
Born Nov. 12, 1915, Alice died at the Bishop Care Center Nov. 23, 2010. She was 95.

A local not-for-profit that has been helping the ill, frail and elderly to stay in their homes is turning 20 years old this week and the community is invited to help celebrate.
Pioneer Home Health Care is hosting a 20th Anniversary Gala from 4-6 p.m. Wednesday at its office at 162 E. Line St., Bishop.
The public is invited to attend.

Members of the Alabama Hills Stewardship Group will be updating Lone Pine residents this week on the designation process that aims to generate federal money for maintenance in the Hills.
The meeting will be held at 6 p.m. Wednesday at the Beverly and Jim Rogers Museum of Lone Pine Film History.
Stewardship Group members are scheduled to give residents a progress report on the designation and discuss proposed volunteer projects in the Hills.
Floyd Martin Blanchard
1918-2010
Funeral services for Floyd Martin Blanchard will be held at 11 a.m. today, Saturday, Nov. 27 at the Mt. Whitney Baptist Church in Lone Pine, with burial to follow at the Independence Cemetery in Independence.
Floyd, or “Marty” as he preferred to be called, was born in Los Angeles in 1918 to Elena and Jack Blanchard and was the younger of two children. Marty died peacefully of natural causes on Nov. 12, 2010 at 12:15 a.m.

Some might argue that the lone, stately sequoia that stands north of the Big Pine business district is already âgreen,â but this year it is even âgreenerâ thanks to new LED Christmas lights replacing the traditional incandescent lights of the past.
Purchased with donations from local residents, the new LED lights use much less energy, last much longer than incandescent lights and will substantially reduce the costs to light the communityâs Christmas tree.
The tree is located on the corner of U.S. 395 and State Route 168.

Members of the Carson & Colorado Railway Society have made visible progress in their mission to restore the historic No. 18 locomotive in Independence.
This past weekend, volunteers with the Railway Society and Miller Towing of Lone Pine took the water tender from its longtime home in Dehy Park and transported it to the Eastern California Museum, where it will be stored while volunteer crews work to restore the locomotive in the park.
