Leilah Juanita Stone
1914-2011
Private services will be held at a later date in Bishop for Turlock resident Leilah Juanita Stone. Friends and family are invited to share their memories at www.allenmortuary.com.
Born April, 1914 in St. Joe, Mo. to Frank and Florence McCumber, Leilah died Saturday, Feb. 12, 2011 at Bel Air Lodge Convalescent Hospital. She was 96.
Jim Gooch
1941-2011
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 26 at Grace Lutheran Church, 711 N. Fowler St., in Bishop for James “Jim” Harvey Gooch. Pastor Kent Puls will officiate.
Born June 6, 1941 in Holtville, Jim died Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011 at Ridgecrest Healthcare Center. He was 69.
Jim spent his early years in Brawley and moved to Modesto while in high school. Jim and Pat were married in 1963 and had two girls, Suzanne and Julie.
Gabriel Navar Avitia
1935-2011
A Rosary Mass was held at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at Brune Chapel for 42-year Ridgecrest resident Gabriel Navar Avita. Mass will be held at 10 a.m. today, Feb. 19, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Bishop. Father John Gracey will officiate. Burial will be at the East Line Street Cemetery.
Born Sept. 12, 1935 in San Jose De La Boca, Mexico, Gabriel died Feb. 15, 2011 at his home in Ridgecrest. He was 75.

The Bay Area man charged with torching the Schulman Grove Visitorâs Center in the Ancient Bristlecone Pine Forest in September 2008 has been sentenced to time served and five years formal probation.

Kenneth ‘Don’ Donald Traver

Funeral services will be private for Kenneth, “Don” Donald Traver.
Born Jan. 10, 1028, Don died the morning of Feb. 6, 2011 at the Bishop Care Center.
Don was a loving father, grandfather, brother and uncle who is dearly midsed by his family and friends.
Irma Tibbets
1926-2011
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Feb. 18 at Big Pine Communty United Methodist Church for lifelong Big Pine resident Irma Tibbetts. The Rev. Dr. Karen Moore. Burial will be at the Woodmen Cemetery in Big Pine.
Born June 30, 1926 in Big Pine, Irma died Feb. 10, 2011 at the Bihsop Care Center. She was 84.

The words of poets past and present filled the room last Friday evening at Inyo Council for the Arts, as eight anxious yet excited students from local high schools recited the poems they had chosen for the county finals of the Poetry Out Loud program.
The first-place winner, Tyler Holt, a senior at Big Pine High School, impressed the audience with his recitation of Lord Alfred Tennysonâs âThe Charge of the Light Brigade,â and his second poem, âWays of Talking,â by the contemporary Chinese poet, Ha Jin.

A grim discovery in a remote region of southeastern Inyo County has authorities searching for answers.
Sheriffâs investigators are attempting to piece together clues that may lead to a positive ID and possibly even cause of death for a body found late last week near Pahrump, Nev.
An individual recreating in the desert last Friday located what are said to be skeletal remains in a remote area west of Pahrump.
According to Inyo County Sheriffâs Public Information Officer Carma Roper, âthe remains were fairly deteriorated, so they could have been out there for months.â
