Eagles head to playoffs

February 13, 2012

After losing to the Boron Bobcats in their last league game Friday night, the Lone Pine Eagles have at least one more shot on the basketball court.
Both the girls and boys’ teams are on their way to the CIF playoffs: the Lady Eagles by virtue of a third-place finish in the Desert Mountain League; the Eagles, as an at-large school.

The Broncos, third in High Desert League at 6-4, head to San Bernardino to take on the Aquinas Falcons Thursday at 7 p.m. The Falcons ended the season with an 11-3 record, second in the Ambassador League.
The Falcons have two double-digit scorers: 5-foot-9 freshman Lindsey Ybarra and 5-foot-3 Corinna Smith. The Broncos have two as well in Shiloh Smith and Tamia Shoshone. But, Katelyne Lent and Brooke Callahan put up impressive numbers toward the end of the season.

Jill Kinmont Boothe mourned at 75

Inyo Country is mourning the loss of one of its most inspiring residents and a pillar of the community.
Jill Kinmont Boothe, born Feb. 16, 1936, passed away from complications related to surgery Thursday, Feb. 9.
Boothe was born in Los Angles but grew up in Bishop, skiing and racing at Mammoth Mountain and earning herself a spot in the 1956 Winter Olympic Games. And even when that dream was cut short by a tragic accident, Boothe proved resilient and unstoppable – carving out for herself a legacy of fearlessness, compassion, determination, generosity, success and gentle spirit.

Changes coming to elections

Voters can expect major changes on the statewide political scene this election year as new legislation takes effect and the results of last year’s Census-related redistricting become more fully realized.
Impacts from the redrawn political districts throughout California – affecting legislative representation in the state Senate and Assembly and U.S. House of Representatives – will be seen as early as the June 5 Primary election, which will decide the frontrunners for the Nov. 6 General Election.

County unveils new tool in vermin fight

Residents who struggle with rodent problems in the spring and summer months in Inyo County now have a new resource that will teach them the best way to handle rats, rabbits, squirrels and other pests.
Peter Newman, a staff research associate with the University of California, was in Inyo County earlier this week setting up a digital learning center at the Agricultural Department to familiarize residents about the safest and most effective methods of dealing with rodent problems.

Lady Broncos tied for HDL championship

The Bishop Lady Broncos soccer team scored a decisive 3-0 win over the Desert Scorpions Thursday afternoon and are now headed into the CIF playoffs.
Bishop is tied with Frazier Mountain for the High Desert League championship at 8-1-1, but holds a better overall record at 10-7-1.
Playoff brackets will be released this weekend.
The game Thursday was icing on the cake for the Broncos.
In the first minutes of the match, Cassie McKinley ripped down the sidelines, outdistancing the Scorpion defenders, for the first goal of the game.

Lady Broncos nail CIF playoff spot

The Lady Broncos’ basketball season has been a rollercoaster ride and Thursday night the team hit the top of the ride.
The team has won games they weren’t supposed to and lost games by a hair.
Thursday night Bishop beat the number-one ranked Desert Lady Scorpions 41-35. With an 8-1 record and a lock on the High Desert League championship, Desert should have won. But, the Broncos, at 5-4, were fighting for a playoff berth and they got it.
Did we mention: the Scorpions are ranked 10th in the CIF Southern Section.

Boys demolish Desert in final league game

The Broncos soccer team demolished the Desert Scorpions, 9-1, Thursday night, securing a spot in CIF playoffs with a second-place finish in High Desert League.
With a 7-1-2 record, the Broncos are ranked behind Rosamond at 9-0-1.
The match was a total goal-fest from Bishop. Danny Lopez scored the first, less than two minutes into the game.
Ignacio Santana, with an assist from Alexis Barajas, sent in the second, midway through the first half. Ten minutes later, it was Barajas scoring on a Lopez assist.

Broncos Toy and Schley top the ski race leaderboard

Bronco ski racers Nick Schley and Robert Toy traded wins and crash-and-burns in the third race series at Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, Friday, Feb. 3.
Laura Stickells was the top Bronco in the women’s division with third- and second- place wins for the day.
Schley came through for a win in the morning two-run series with a combined time of 45.74.
Toy’s combined time of 52.94 in the afternoon runs rated the number one spot.

Broncos’ season ends

The Broncos saw their hopes for a spot in the CIF playoffs vaporize Thursday night with a 37-60 loss to the HDL champion Desert Scorpions. But, just the fact Bishop had a shot at the playoffs is a mark of the team’s progress this year.
Broncos coach Ben Arcularius knew this season was the first step toward a strong basketball program.
Bishop fields exceptional football and baseball squads in the High Desert League where the other schools excel on the court, making Arcularius’ first step a big one.
