Bishop resident Craig Jackson went on a hike Jan. 24 and had what he calls “probably my favorite wildlife adventure so far” in the several months since he moved here from Southern California. Jackson hiked five miles up Arc Road in the foothills of the Sierra west of Big Pine just below Piper Peak, along the way catching sight of at least a half dozen hawks and a golden eagle near Baker Creek, and finding a huge set of antlers. But the best part, he says, was the buck he awoke while coming up and over a ridge.

Lubken Ranch a vital link to valley history

The people crowded around the stout loading chute at the Lubken Ranch were bundled up against the morning wind in a colorful assortment of winter gear, from cowboy hats and canvas Carhartt coats to wool beanies and Patagonia down jackets.
“I was hoping for a little better day. It’s a bit blustery,” said Scott Kemp, which made some in the crowd wonder what the local rancher might consider “windy.”

Playhouse 395’s ‘Oklahoma!’ stampedes into Bishop

Residents are invited to grab their cowboy hats and boots as Playhouse 395’s production of the Rogers and Hammerstein blockbuster musical “Oklahoma!” stampedes into the historic Bishop Union High School Theater this March with cowboys, cowgirls and farmers kicking up a song and dance storm.
The local cast, led by real-life couple Jenn and Eddie Davis as Laurey and Curly, kicked off rehearsal right after New Year’s for the Playhouse 395 spring show.

Noreen Rae McKellips, age 80, a resident of Bishop, born in Los Angeles on July 24, 1933 passed away peacefully on Jan. 31, 2014 at her home.

Roberta Lynn Corning

Roberta Lynn Corning
1963-2014

Roberta Lynn Corning, born Dec. 18, 1963, passed away at her home in Dyer, Nev. Jan. 18, 2014.
A beloved wife of David Corning, she was also the devoted daughter of Isabel Marshall of Big Pine and loving sister of Ruth Ann Goede of Bishop.
Roberta was born in Pasadena and grew up in Sierra Madre, but lived 24 years in the Bishop area before moving with her husband David to Dyer.
She was preceded in death by her father, William Hayward Marshall of Big Pine in September of 2012.

LADWP begins new phase of dust control mitigation

The dirt is starting to fly on the Owens Dry Lake as construction starts on the next phase of dust control work on the massive lakebed.
Barnard Construction has been awarded a $208 million contract by the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power for Phase 7a of the dust mitigation work on the lake. The company has been the primary contractor on the lake since the dust mitigation work began more than a decade ago.

Lone Pine High School’s ag students will get a look at government in action Friday afternoon as they and instructor Brenda Lacey ask the Los Angeles/Inyo County Standing Committee to finalize 15 years of discussions and get water to the school’s pasture.

Bishop joins Healthy Eating, Active Living movement

Bishop has joined the statewide HEAL movement in an effort to raise awareness about obesity and combat the epidemic with fun, family-friendly activities and policies.
Through HEAL, the Healthy Eating and Active Living campaign, cities all across California have been working together to share ideas about how to promote healthier communities.

Corrine Piper
1928-2014

Corrine Piper was born April 12, 1928, to Ed Lewis and Tennie Lent. She was called to start her journey and meet her loved ones that went before her on Jan. 25, 2014.
She was the head maid at Vagabond when it first opened and she worked at Speagles Laundry.
She then met and married Steve Piper.
They resided here in Bishop and had five kids. Unfortunately Steve was taken early from the family and then she lived in Benton for many years until her death.

Kenneth Martin Deboy

Kenneth Martin Deboy
1934-2014

Born March 24, 1934 in Lodi, Kenneth Martin Deboy passed away Jan. 20, 2014 in Reno.
He was a charter member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Bishop and served as a church treasurer for 42 years.
Ken graduated from the University of Colorado, Boulder in 1960 with a degree in civil engineering. He went to work for the California Department of Transportation, District 10, in Stockton. In 1968 he transferred to District 9 in Bishop. He retired after 37 years of service.
