Altrusa spreads literacy, and comfort, throughout Eastern Sierra

Excitement is spreading throughout the Eastern Sierra for the upcoming Altrusa Art Show.
The 16th annual event will be held this weekend in the Floriculture Building at the Tri-County Fairgrounds in Bishop, from 9 a.m.- 4 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m.-2 p.m. on Sunday.
According to Altrusa member Andrea Shallcross, this art show is a unique and beloved opportunity for local artists to share their work.

Business owners, community leaders urged to innovate

Next week, more than 150 community leaders from across the Sierra, both on the east and west side, will be gathering in Tahoe City for a three-day conference on planning for the region’s economic future.
As it celebrates 20 years of community development, the Sierra Business Council is hosting the Peak Innovation Conference Oct. 8-10, featuring lectures by two best-selling authors, among other agenda items.

Down by the River

This past Saturday afternoon, Range and River Books looked exactly the way owner Diane Doonan pictured when she moved her used book store to Bishop’s Main Street. The store was full of people: families with barely-walkers reading in the children’s section, friends getting their first look at her new location and readers spending a chilly, breezy afternoon working their way through the orderly maze of books.

Anita Rae Wallis

Born May 10, 1948, Anita Rae Wallis passed away Sept. 12, 2014.
She is survived by her partner of 21 years, Linda Gregg of Independence; her daughter, Deena Roberts and her family of Arkansas, including Anita’s grandchildren; brother, Mike Wallis; sister-in-law, Pam Wallis of Bishop; as well as family and friends of more than 58 years, including Steve and Rosie Young of Lone Pine.
A celebration of life was held Tuesday, Sept. 23 at the Lone Pine VFW Hall.

Louis ‘Lou’ Richard Hahaj

Louis Richard Hahaj (Lou), age 56, died at Renown Regional Medical center in Reno, Nev. on Sept. 13, 2014 after a long illness.
Born Aug. 28, 1958 in San Gabriel, Lou’s family moved to Bishop when he was 6. Lou served in the United States Marine Corps from 1978 until 1983 when he was honorably discharged. He worked as a heavy equipment mechanic for 37 years.
Lou had a big heart and loved his family very much. He would have given anything to anyone in need. Lou will be missed.

Motel fee would fund tourism projects

In an effort to strengthen the local tourism economy by increasing overnight hotel and motel stays, the Bishop City Council has taken steps to establish a Bishop Tourism Improvement District.
A resolution that would establish the BTID was approved by the City Council as its Sept. 22 meeting.

New leader for RV school district

(The following is the third of three stories on new administrators at local school districts. –Ed.)
Of the three educators moving into new administrative roles at new schools, Karen Marshall has the easiest transition into the role of superintendent/principal. She has been at Round Valley Elementary School for 15 years and served as vice principal for the last three under Dan Moore.
Marshall attributes the closeness of the community and parent involvement with that special feeling at RV as well as the relationship among the staff.

Annual car show arrives in Bishop Friday

A cavalcade of street rods, hot rods, classics, antique and muscle cars will be rolling into Bishop this weekend for the annual Fall Colors Car Show hosted by the Owens Valley Cruisers.
The 21st Annual Fall Colors Car Show will kick off at 4:30 p.m. Friday with cruise-in registration in the Vons/Kmart parking lot.
Each year, the car club welcomes early arrivals for the show with music and a chance to hang out and show off their rides at the cruise-in. Show participants are also invited to cruise Main Street in Bishop during the cruise-in, from 4:30-8:30 p.m.
