Voters from across the country will be heading to the polls today to help decide the future of various state and federal offices, as well as the outcomes of local elections.
In addition to widerspread races and issues, in Inyo County, residents will be voting for members of their communityâs school board. Bishop residents will also have the opportunity to elect two members to the Bishop City Council.
Local voters on today will have the chance to help test brand-new voting technology that could some day revolutionize the way ballots are cast not just in California, but across the country.
Inyo County will be testing out an open source voting system today at the Charles Brown Auditorium in Bishop, where thousands of residents will be reporting to the polls to help decide the fate of several local and statewide races.
The system, known as LiveBallot Tablet, has not been certified for use in elections and wonât actually be tabulating votes as part of the Nov. 4 General Election.
Randy Short, a Vietnam combat vet and a member of the California Boating and Waterways Commission, is leading a charge to obtain state money to build fishing docks on a number of local lakes and ponds to improve access for boats, kayaks and float tubes.
Short is working with local volunteers, Inyo County, Mono County and the U.S. Forest Service to identify which bodies of water should have a dock added.
The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power is looking into the program to decide if it wants to get involved, according to Short.

During the Oct. 23 partial eclipse of the sun, members of the student-directed group captured 11 images of the crescent sun taken from a suborbital helium balloon. The photo series was taken âin a way thatâs never been done before,â said Earth to Sky mentor Dr. Tony Phillips.
Inyo County Planning is nearing completion of its Renewable Energy General Plan Update Environmental Impact Report as work continues on other General Plan updates.
Planning Director Josh Hart explained that the General Plan, which experienced a major overhaul in 2001, is a âliving, breathing documentâ that is subject to regular amendments to ensure the countyâs guiding document for land-use planning is up-to-date with the changing world.
The Inyo County-L.A. Technical Group met Thursday afternoon to go over the Los Angeles Department of Water and Powerâs conservative pumping plan for the next six months. The group, staff from LADWP and the Inyo County Water Department, will reconvene in late November, in time to dot the iâs and cross the tâs before the December Standing Committee meeting.
