Rita Harris Scholz passed away July 5, 2014 after a lengthy illness. Her husband, Ulli Scholz, was by her side.
She is survived by her husband, Ulli Scholz; daughter, Carol King; son, Donald Harris; numerous grandchildren; and her sister, Lucia De Salvatore.

1933-2014

Laura Manes passed away June 30, 2014 in Reno. Born Feb. 2, 1933 in Texas, she was raised in Kansas City, Mo. She lived in southern California where she lived with her three daughters before moving to June Lake in 1973. Laura moved to Bishop in 1995 where she lived until September 2013.

The eagerly-awaited sequel to "Sharnado" premiered last night on the SyFy Channel. Reviews have been … mixed. But part of the fun came from seeing which celebrity would pop up next. In fact, there were more celebrity cameos in "Sharknado 2" than a Quentin Tarantino movie.

Jim Tatum named city administrator

On Monday, Bishop City Council approved the hiring of James “Jim” Jay Tatum as the new city administrator when current administrator, Keith Caldwell, retires on Friday, Aug. 29.
According to the city, Tatum brings more than 20 years of management-level experience, which he will use to “facilitate the realization of the significant potential that exists within the city.” The appointment comes after a lengthy vetting period, which Tatum and several council members addressed at the July 28 Council meeting.

Standoff ends in arrest

July 30, 2014

A short standoff at 489 Pa Me Ln. in Bishop ended peacefully Tuesday with the arrest of Bishop resident Sam Vega Jr., 38.
The Inyo County Sheriff’s Department received a call at about 11:40 a.m. Tuesday reporting that a male subject had threatened a Southern California Edison Employee with a firearm.

LP ambulance service on life support

The Lone Pine Volunteer Fire Protection District will have a measure on the November ballot asking for a $100 parcel tax to support its ambulance service. The papers have been filed with the County Clerk; a ballot measure number has not yet been issued.
The district’s finances just don’t add up, said Fire Chief LeRoy Kritz. The fire department is funded through property taxes but the ambulance service, taken over by the department when a private service left the area in 1994, has to be self-supporting. “Initially it wasn’t self-supporting,” Kritz said.

Search for Cottonwood tenants ongoing

Residents may be able to kick off their 2014 Christmas shopping at Cottonwood Plaza, which is expected to open with new tenants before the end of the year.
As the City of Bishop prepares to embark on an economic development study to improve commerce within the city limits, Inyo County Realtor Stan Smith of Pleasant Valley Associates is looking for tenants interested in leasing space located in the long-vacant shopping center at the corner of North Main and Yaney streets.

From a full Stormtrooper costume to dressing just like the Invisible Man, it’s safe to say that the fans went all out this year to portray their favorite characters. Which meant finding their favorite was no easy task.
