ES Land Trust protects historic site

Eastern Sierra Land Trust ended 2013 and kicked off the new year with a new addition to its collection of preserved wild spaces in the Eastern Sierra.
In the final days of 2013, ESLT accepted what it is calling a “very generous gift” from the David and Elva Sinai Foundation. The group donated an important, 40-acre conservation property along Green Creek, in the hills south of Bridgeport.

John Ross Storm
1924-2014

John Ross Storm passed away on Jan. 9, 2014 at home in Flagstaff, Ariz. He was born on March 30, 1924 in the city of Detroit, Mich., the son of the late Arthur and Frances Storm and brother of the late Arthur A. Storm and Donald J. Storm.
Upon graduation from high school, John enlisted in the Army Air Force. During his time with the Army Air Force he served as a Flight Engineer in the B-17 and B-19 planes. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Shortly thereafter he married Jean Frederick of Bradford, Pa. on Sept. 14, 1946.

Aiden Christopher Bacoch was born Christmas night at 10:16 p.m. to Ana Bacoch at Northern Inyo Hospital. He went with the Lord on January 13, from Loma Linda Children’s Hospital, to be with his great-grandpa and great-grandma, Michael and Geraldine Bacoch, Sr., and his cousin, Tiana Hooper.

ESBCA ups its offerings for local cancer patients

Eastern Sierra Breast Cancer Alliance has begun offering yet another service to residents fighting cancer.
ESBCA has formed a support group as part of its ongoing efforts to provide financial as well as emotional support to all cancer patients.
The first session was offered in December. Dubbed the ESBCA Coffee  & Cream Cancer Support Group Conversation, the meetings are being offered monthly from 9-11 a.m. at Jacks Restaurant in Bishop. The next session is scheduled for Monday, Feb. 3.

More endangered species proposals may impact Inyo

With federal officials proposing more endangered species listings for threatened animals in Inyo County, local leaders are concerned that the feds are ignoring impacts on local communities.
Federal officials are moving forward with plans to designate thousands of acres of Inyo County’s backcountry as critical habitat for the mountain yellow legged frog and Yosemite toad. On Tuesday, local leaders are expressed “deep concern” about another plan to add dozens of animals to the federal Endangered Species list.

Bishop Community Concerts presents pianist Umi Garrett

Inyo County residents have an opportunity to see a world-renowned piano solo prodigy at the next offering of the 2013-14 Community Concert Season.
Umi Garrett will be performing live at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 28 at the Bishop Union High School auditorium.
Garrett began playing piano when she was four years old. By age 8, she made an appearance on NBC’s “The Ellen DeGeneres Show. By 9, she rleased her first album and she hasn’t looked back.

Law requires most homes to have CO detectors

Bishop Fire Chief Ray Seguine brought it to the attention of the City Council at its Jan. 13 meeting that, with the exception of all-electric homes, all homes are required to have properly installed and maintained carbon monoxide detectors.

Melba Davis Reger
1917-2014

Melba Davis Reger, 96, passed away on Monday, Jan. 6, 2014 at Golden Meadows in Banning. Melba was born May 21, 1917 to Herman and Meta Pietsch Hinz in Farmington, Minn. and was a graduate of Farmington High School. She was a resident of Big Pine for 63 years, Jamestown, Calif. for seven years and Banning for five years. She was always active in her community as a Girl Scout Leader, the Gold Diggers Club and an active member of the Methodist Church in Big Pine.

Thomas M. Knight
1949-2014

Thomas M. Knight passed away Jan. 13, 2014, after many years of fighting cancer. He was born on Oct. 8, 1949, in Hawthorne to Herbert and Elaine Knight.
For more than 30 years, he worked as a lineman with Edison, acquiring many nicknames such as Part Lights, Old Man and Pops. He was liked and respected by many.
He was a wonderful husband, father figure, provider and friend. We will miss him and are grateful to have had him in our lives.

Regula ‘Reggy’ Fandrich

Regula ‘Reggy’ Fandrich
1922-2014

Regula “Reggy” Fandrich passed away on Jan. 7, 2014 at the age of 91. She died at the home of her son, Dale, and daughter-in-law, Wanna, in Palmdale. Dale and Wanna had been her devoted caretakers for the last five years of her life.
