Sonora Pass open

In yet another sign that summer is on its way to the Eastern Sierra, Caltrans has removed the packed winter snow, cleared the debris and made the necessary repairs to open State Route 108 over Sonora Pass.
“The diligent work of Caltrans crews enabled the opening of the pass for motorists who utilize this route,” said Public Information Officer Florene Trainor. “Caltrans crews responsible for the pass opening extend their best wishes for safe summer traveling to those who enjoy the recreational opportunities this part of California has to offer.”

Feds arraign Mammoth man on child porn charges

Gene Wayne Harris, 41, of Mammoth Lakes, was arraigned in federal court today on a grand jury indictment that charges him with attempted production of child pornography and attempted enticement of a minor, U.S. Attorney Benjamin B. Wagner announced.

Bishop softball team drops first HDL game

Where was Wily Coyote when the Bishop Lady Broncos needed him?
Tied with the Rosamond Roadrunners softball team for first place in the High Desert League, the 4-0 Broncos fell victim to untimely errors and solid Roadrunner pitching with their 1-5 loss Tuesday afternoon on home field. What they could have used were a few sticks of dynamite or a piece of Acme heavy equipment to disrupt a very strong Rosamond team.

The Bishop Broncos junior varsity baseball team ran rings around the Rosamond Roadrunners at home Tuesday. The 10-0 win maintains the Broncos perfect league season.
“The boys are getting the proper work in at practice and it shows,” said coach Chris Walston. “I couldn’t be happier with how they’re playing.”
Bronco Thomas Montoya pitched four and two-thirds innings with 11 strikeouts and 1 walk. Alex Armitage came in in the bottom of the fourth to finish out the game with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

1970-2013

Mark Marino Mancini, age 42, unexpectedly passed away peacefully in his home on April 17, 2013. A Celebration of Life service will be held at 3 p.m. Thursday, April 25 at Immanuel Baptist Chapel, 1201 N. China Lake Blvd. in Ridgecrest. Pastor Bill Logan will be officiating.
Mark was born Aug. 25, 1970 in Orange County. In 1975 the family moved to Lone Pine where they owned the Scrub Board Laundromat and a citizen band radio store. Mark graduated from Lone Pine High School in 1988. While there he played football and joined the golf team.

Tioga Pass cleared to eastern park entrance

A crew from Caltrans clears the road on Tioga Pass just in time to allow brave and hearty anglers access to high-country fishing spots during this weekend’s fishing opener. Caltrans has re-opened the pass (State Route 120 West/Tioga Pass Road) to the east Yosemite Park Entrance Gate. The highway will remain closed beyond the park. “Users can access S.R. 120 for recreational activities from the junction of U.S. 395 at Lee Vining up to the park entrance closure gate,” a press release from Caltrans states. This partial opening is dependent on favorable weather.

Lady Broncos beat Kern Valley

Kern Valley has been in the Bishop softball team’s crosshairs since, probably, forever.
Friday afternoon at Lake Isabella, the Lady Broncos scored that long-awaited hit, taking down the Broncs, 3-1 to stay perfect in High Desert League play, tied 4-0 with Rosamond.
That tie will be broken this afternoon as Bishop hosts the Lady Roadrunners at City Park. First pitch: 3:15 p.m.
“We had great pitching,” said coach Stacy Van Nest. “We out hit the Broncs and played solid defense. I am so proud of our team for their great effort.”

Eagles stampede Mustangs

Lone Pine’s Lady Golden Eagles leveled the Mojave Mustangs on the road Friday with a big 17-1 win.
“We came out a little flat in the first two innings,” said coach Liz Jones who chalked the flatness up to the team “just making the coach nervous.”
Lone Pine took off in the third, burying the Mustangs with hits.
The Eagles, 3-2, are third in Desert Mountain League, nipping at the heels of the Boron at 5-0 and Vasquez, 4-1. Lone Pine heads to Vasquez tomorrow.

Bishop Broncos home after rough losses on the road

The Bishop Broncos fell to the Kern Valley Broncs, 0-8, Friday afternoon.
Both teams are now 2-2, behind the undefeated Frazier Mountain Falcons and the Rosamond Roadrunners at 3-1. Bishop faces Rosamond at home this afternoon.
“We had three hours of batting practice Saturday,” said coach Tim Reid. “After a tough week, that helped get us back on track, helped us regain our confidence. We’ll be ready for Rosamond.”
“We’re in a slump,” he said. “We need to start hitting the ball and take the pressure off the pitcher.”
