USFWS reopens comment period

Inyo residents have another opportunity to weigh in on the discussion about the mountain yellow-legged frogs and Yosemite toad and how critical habitat endangered/threatened species designations may impact life in the Eastern Sierra.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service announced Thursday that it is reopening the public comment period for its proposal to list the Sierra Nevada yellow-legged frog and the northern population segment of the mountain yellow-legged frog as endangered and the Yosemite toad as threatened under the Endangered Species Act.

County weighing options for dump fees

With Inyo County Consolidated Waste facing a deficit for the coming fiscal year, local leaders are looking at ways to boost revenue and reduce expenses.
One option for maintaining state compliance while getting a clearer picture of the amount of waste going into local dumps, Senior Deputy County Administrator Pam Hennarty said, would be including scales at the Bishop-Sunland Landfill.

D.A. Maillet to retire

Longtime Inyo County District Attorney Art Maillet announced this week that he will be retiring early next month.
Maillet, who is retiring for medical reasons, said he is not one for goodbyes, but said “it has been an honor to serve the public” in Inyo County, and added that he is happy to report that he will be retiring with “a successful prosecution rate.”
Maillet will officially step down as D.A. Aug. 10.

Robert was born on July 18, 1931 and passed into Heaven with Jesus on July 12, 2013. He was born in Tennessee and served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War.
Robert settled in California and worked for Caltrans until retirement. He greatly enjoyed his family and enjoyed living in the High Sierra very much.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia and sister, Mary Shuggart.

He is survived by his twin brother, Claude “Pete” Peters and sister, Claudia Krause.

Helen Merydith Macklin

Helen Merydith Macklin
1927-2013

Helen Merydith Macklin, 85, born Aug. 16, 1927 in Pasadena, passed away July 14, 2013 at the Bishop Care Center.
Bob and Merydith moved from Duarte in the summer of 1968 to Bishop where they lived until 1988 and then moved to Gardnerville, Nev., and then back to Bishop in May of 2011 to be closer to family.

County nearing commitment phase for new building

Inyo County is approaching the end of its “non-binding” agreement to research construction of a consolidated office building. But before moving into the binding phase of the project, it is planning to confer with residents and gauge public opinion.
The Inyo County Board of Supervisors agreed Tuesday to host a series of meetings in August to present the design and financial plan for the building and hear input from residents.

Wye Road Project could soon go out to bid

The City of Bishop’s Wye Road Intersection Improvement project will be nearer its final phase once the City Council approves the announcement of construction bids, thus helping to secure increased future traffic safety at the Wye Road/U.S. 6 intersection.
According to Public Works Director David Grah, consideration of opening the bids will be on the Monday, July 22 Council agenda. If approved, open bidding for the $600,000 construction job would advertised the following day. Bid deadline is Thursday, Aug. 22.

Forty-five year Mammoth Lakes resident, Edward Bouska, passed away at Eisenhower Medical Center in Rancho Mirage on June 21, 2013 of pancreatic cancer.
