L.A. man arrested after violent attacks

Despite wind, rain and floods that hampered initial response efforts, law enforcement officials were able to apprehend a man suspected of committing a violent robbery Sunday night in Pearsonville.
According to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Office, Johnny Pulido-Gonzalez, 24, of Los Angeles, was arrested Tuesday, July 23 in the Kennedy Meadows area for an alleged car-jacking and attempted murder. He later confessed to Sunday night’s robbery during which he stabbed a convenience store clerk.

Aspen Fire continues to grow

The Aspen Fire, located within the Sierra National Forest in Fresno County about seven miles North of Big Creek continues to grow. As of 7 a.m. Tuesday, the fire had grown from 11,101 to 14,147 acres. It is currently 25 percent contained.
The fire is currently burning off Stump Springs Road, North of Aspen Springs. The South Central Sierra Interagency Incident Management Team is in command of the Aspen Fire.

West Bishop heads to semis in Men’s Division

July 26, 2013

West Bishop and High Sierra Containers, seeds one and eight, respectively, kicked off the City Softball League’s Men’s Division Wednesday. Containers put up a good fight but West Bishop dominated the game with a 15-3 win.
West and Sweetwater have been neck and neck through the season at the top of the Men’s standings. West pulled off the number one seed with a late-season win over Sweetwater.

Coed C championship update

July 26, 2013

The City of Bishop’s Softball League Coed C Division run for the championship title is shaping up for a showdown this coming Tuesday.
The Reds took the 6 p.m. playoff game last Tuesday with a forfeit from Cowboys and Indians and will meet the number one seed BSers July 30.
The Crusaders put up a good fight against Sierra Auto Body, but fell with a score of 16-12. Sierra Auto Body faces off with the number two seeded Jacksons.

Softball Tourney Fundraiser cancelled
The One Pitch Softball Tournament hosted by the Bishop Lady Broncos’ basketball team and scheduled for this weekend at City Park has been cancelled.

Archery Club July Shoot
The Eastern Sierra Bowmen’s Archery Club will hold its shoot this weekend at the Big Springs site off the Owens River Road near Crestview Rest Area. There will be white and red signs posted for directions. The shoot is designed for traditional bows only; no compound bows will be allowed.

Fly Fishing Faire slated for late September

Cerro Coso Community College has been selected by the Southwest Council, International Federation of Fly Fishers to host the 2013 Fly Fishing Faire, Sept. 20-22.
“It will be a cornucopia of all things fly-fishing in the heart of California’s fly-fishing world,” said Connie Bullock, fair coordinator, “as well as an introduction to all aspects of the sport including beginner and intermediate fly casting, fly tying demonstrations and both classroom and on-the-water instruction”

Remembering the voice of the Eastern Sierra

He had one of the most recognizable voices in the Eastern Sierra – a voice he used for more than two decades to greet listeners each morning with their favorite songs, humorous anecdotes, congratulations on milestones and achievements, event announcements and summaries of the important news of the day.
Chances are better than good that if you lived, worked or grew up in the Owens Valley during the 1980s or ’90s, at some point – if not on a regular basis – you started your day with John Young.

Rains a mixed blessing for Inyo

Thunderstorms packing torrential rains may have been a welcome relief from the recent heat wave, but they also wreaked havoc on local roads and highways in the form of flash floods and mud slides.
Inyo County was under a “Flash Flood Watch” Monday night and all of Tuesday as a monsoonal weather system moved through the region, bringing electrical storms, high winds and heavy downpours – which gave the valley more precipitation than it received all winter.
