VALLEJO, Calif., JUNE 11 â A 28-year-old firefighter from Susanville, Calif., died Monday afternoon as a result of injuries received on a wildfire on the Modoc National Forest in northeast California. Luke Sheehy was a member of the California Smokejumpers, based out of Redding.

According to the Mammoth 2 Bishop website, www.mammoth2bishop.com, the event is also the culmination of organizer and High Sierra Events founder Lloyd Cearleyâs five-year dream. Cearley said he has been hoping to offer the unique cycling event since he fell in love with and moved to Mammoth Lakes in 2002-03.

Rusty Gregory, the chief executive officer of Mammoth Mountain Ski Area, will step aside from his duties, he said Wednesday night.
Speaking at a Town Council meeting on June 5, Gregory said he would make a formal announcement later this month.
âWeâve made a lot of ⊠changes,â Gregory said. âIn two to three weeks Iâll be announcing whoâs going to run Mammoth Mountain Ski Area next. Mammoth Mountain will not be run by me.â
Gregory did not elaborate on his decision before the council, and afterward declined further comment on his announcement.

JUNE 3, 2013 â Yosemite National Park officials are advising visitors to exercise extreme caution when exploring the valleyâs natural beauty in the wake of two deaths over this past weekend.
According to the National Park Service, Felix Joseph Kiernan, 28, of London, England and Aleh Kalman, 19, of Sacramento, died this past weekend after the former was hit by a falling rock while climbing, and the latter was swept over one of the parkâs tallest and most popular waterfalls.

A long-lost piece of local history may have been located on Owens Lake as Los Angeles Department of Water and Power crews prepare for a new dust mitigation project.
The LADWP will be meeting today to discuss the Environmental Impact Report for the Phase 7a project and the discovery of what may be the site of a massacre of Owens Valley Paiutes located within the mitigation area. The mitigation project has a federally-imposed deadline of December 2013.

Geraldine Ruth Peek died at 6 a.m. Monday, May 27, 2013. She was received safely into the arms of Jesus who lived, died and rose from the dead for her. Services that will recall Godâs mercies to her will be held at Grace Lutheran Church, 10:30 a.m. on June 9, 2013.

FRIDAY, MAY 31, 2013 â Crews with the Long Valley Fire Department responded to a fire Thursday afternoon that almost completely destroyed one home and threatened nearby vegetation on Crowley Lake Drive.
The cause of fire, which was reported at about 2:30 p.m. was undetermined as of press time Friday. The fire started in the southern section of the home while the residents were away, and according to volunteer firefighter, Second District Mono County Supervisor and former Long Valley Fire Chief Fred Stump, could have burned unnoticed for some time before it was reported.

Blackrock Fish Hatchery broodstock, those big trout used for spawning to propagate future generations, are being released in the Lower Owens River.
This week marked the second large-scale release of the hatcheryâs broodstock in as many months, and the Department of Fish and Wildlife said there is going to be at least one more release in the coming month.
DFW Environmental Biologist James Erdman said he and other DFW biologists wanted to let all anglers know that the big broodstock fish from the ponds at the Black Rock Hatchery are now up for grabs.
