A long-awaited Bishop Paiute Tribe road project is under way and while many families heave a grateful sigh of relief, there are some who express concerns.
The ongoing three-road project will create paved roads where unnamed dirt roads have cut through residential land assignments for decades. Road construction requires that affected residents provide easement, or the right to use their land, Assistant Tribal Administrator David ThunderEagle said, to which they agreed upon assignment of land.
Work continues on Digital 395, which was supposed to be completed last month but was delayed by permitting and funding issues.
A new completion date for the project, which involves the installation of fiber-optic cable to allow access to faster Internet speeds, has been set for October.
Most of the work along the U.S. 395 corridor from Carson City to Barstow has been finished, meanwhile. Crews are currently working to install fiber-optic cable in the Crowley Lake and Casa Diablo areas.
Inyo County, in an effort to bolster the local economy, is handing out $20,000 to various community organizations to help fund local events and draw visitors to the area.
For the fall 2013-14 Advertising County Resources grant cycle, the county is funding six different programs that were reviewed and recommended by a volunteer panel. The projects range from the 2013 Millpond Music Festival and the Lone Pine Film Festival, to a guide to easy hikes in Inyo County.
The Lone Pine Eagles and head football coach John Kane learned a lot about the team in Tonopah, Nev. last Friday.
They learned they could play hard for nearly four hours.
They figured out the younger players could step up when two of the seniors were sidelined with injuries.
They now know theyâve got an offensive line to be reckoned with.
OK, the Eagles fell to the Tonopah Muckers, 65-45, in an epic game that was prolonged in the final minutes by penalty calls by meticulous referees. But those bright spots Kane saw in the teamâs season opening loss were amplified in game two.
