Virginia Ruth Cannon

Virginia Ruth Cannon, age 96, passed away in her home in Thornton, Colo. on July 21, 2013. She was married to the love of her life, Gordon, for 58 years before his passing in 1998.
She is survived by her three sons, Glenn, David and William.
She will be dearly missed by family and friends.

Pamela Jean Jones

Born Oct. 2, 1963 in Los Angeles to Barbara Jean Oden and Lewis Harold Jones, Pamela, 49, graduated to heaven on July 4, 2013 at home, surrounded by her loving pets.
She is survived by her mother, Barbara Jones; sister, Karen Kemp; brother, Steven Jones; daughter, Sierra Christly, son, David Jones; and her one and only much loved and cherished grandchild, Gabrielle Kleppel.
Pam completed medical assistant training at San Joaquin Valley College, 1989-1920. She also attended Super Natural Ministries Training (SMTI) Bible College from 1995-1997.

David Willis Haas, age 78, resident of Lone Pine for 10 years, born in Marion, Kan. on April 18, 1935, passed away July 30, 2013.

Former SAR member missing in Rock Creek area

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21, 2013 – A multi-agency search and rescue effort was launched at about 10:30 p.m. Tuesday night after Inyo County Sheriff's dispatch was notified of an overdue hiker.
According to Sheriff's Public Information Officer Carma Roper, 47 year-old Swall Meadows resident Matthew Mooney set out Tuesday for a day hike in the Rock Creek area. Mooney contacted family via cell phone at about noon Tuesday, saying he was returning from Round Valley Peak and would be home in a couple hours. He has not been seen or heard from since.

WEDNESDAY, AUG. 21, 2013 – For the first time ever, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power will be offering live interactive telecasts of its Board of Commissioners meetings in the Owens Valley beginning with the Tuesday, Aug. 27 meeting.
The meeting will be televised at 1:30 p.m. in the LADWP Administrative Office at 300 Mandich St. in Bishop.

Suicidal man accidently shoots girlfriend: police

Charges are pending against a Benton man taken into custody Tuesday evening by Mono County Sheriff’s deputies following what the department describes as a possible suicide attempt.
Sheriff’s dispatch received a 911 call around 6:45 p.m. Tuesday regarding a shooting at the Mammoth Lakes Fish Hatchery, or Hot Creek Hatchery.
Deputies responded along with the California Highway Patrol, Mammoth Lakes Police Department, Mono County Paramedics and Long Valley Fire Department.

Public quiet on proposed county building

A handful of Lone Pine residents gathered at Statham Hall Monday evening to hear information about the new county consolidated office building that is being proposed in Bishop, but only a few residents voiced opinions or asked questions about the proposal.
Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce Director Kathleen New said she has heard a number of negative comments from various Southern Inyo County residents, and local leaders stressed that there are no plans to move offices or services from Lone Pine or any other communities to Bishop if the building is approved.

Top honors for Inyo’s State Fair exhibit

With a fraction of the budget of other counties and a display they built themselves at home, Rich and Kathy White not only took home another gold medal at the California State Fair for their Inyo County exhibit, but also one of the most important awards offered at the 17-day event.
The Whites, aided by a hearty contingent of fellow volunteers, secured for Inyo County the 2013 People’s Choice Award – a sought-after honor that’s viewed as an endorsement of the tens of thousands of fairgoers who visit the California’s Counties Exhibit portion of the State Fair.

More trash talk for Board of Supervisors

Members of the Board of Supervisors on Tuesday received the third in a trilogy of workshops regarding Inyo County’s landfills and its overall solid waste program.
During the presentation, Deputy County Administrator and Integrated Waste Manager Pam Hennarty said that changes must be made to the county’s solid waste program to make it self-sufficient. Those changes may come in the form of increased rates, or changes to the way commercial waste haulers are regulated, or a combination of both.

Bishop City Council honors local firefighters

This past Monday, the City of Bishop recognized and thanked local firefighters who have been among the nearly 2,000 personnel who have been braving the Aspen Fire since it was ignited by lightning last month.
