County offers event, program grants

July 10, 2013

Local leaders are preparing to help fund fall activities for local residents and visitors through the bi-annual Community Project Sponsorship Program grant.
Inyo County is accepting grant applications from non-profit organizations planning programs, projects or events taking place from mid-August to Nov. 11, 2013. Applications are due at the end of this month.
The county has $20,000 worth of grant funding available in this cycle.

Big Pine Tribe launches farmers market, demo garden

The Big Pine Paiute Tribe of the Owens Valley’s newly-awarded sustainable food system grant is already sprouting a demonstration garden, farmers market and seed bank as well as fortifying a tool-lending shed and community garden greenhouse.

Lost Laurel Mountain climbers located Sunday

Mono County Search and Rescue helped escort two climbers off Laurel Mountain over the weekend after the visitors lost their way.

Inyo’s State Fair exhibit also ready for action

Inyo County ambassadors Rich and Kathy White have nearly completed construction of the local exhibit for the California State Fair in Sacramento.
According to the Whites, the major construction is finished and there are just a couple TV cutouts to make and one mural to get properly anchored before the annual event kicks off July 12.
This week, the couple will be working on placing photo exhibits and installing TVs in time for the million-plus spectators to arrive.

From July 3-4, residents of and visitors to Inyo County were treated to three major pyrotechnics displays (at the Paiute Palace Casino, Eastern Sierra Regional Airport, above, and Independence Airport), two running events (a 5K/10K in Big Pine and 4K/10K in Independence), two community breakfasts (in Big Pine and Independence), a one-pitch softball tournament (in Bishop), loads of pie and ice cream (Bishop and Independence) and a traditional Independence Day parade (you guessed it – in Independence, below).

The Felice family extends our deepest appreciation for those who have expressed their sympathy over the recent loss of the family matriarch, Elizabeth M. Felice, recently of Lone Pine and previously from Tujunga. Private services will be held with interment at sea.

Sacramento-based executive recruiting firm HFS Consultants seeks local and nationwide input in the initial phase of the search for the Northern Inyo Hospital chief executive officer who will replace current CEO John Halfen when he retires in July 2014.
