Debbie Berry McKenna Boyd 1970-2013

Debbie Berry McKenna Boyd, 42, a beloved wife, mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend, passed away June 22, 2013 at her home in Fairbault, Minn. Her loving, caring nature influenced everyone who ever met her. Her compassion and service to others was an inspiration to her family and friends.
Deb was born Oct. 13, 1970 in Rapid City, S.D. to John Berry and Roberta Berry. She came to live in Bishop at the age of 3, where she was raised by her parents John and Lynda Berry.

Phone scam targeting Bishop area

Residents being targeted by the latest phone scam are being given the same advice by local law enforcement: never give personal information to strangers.
Following that simple suggestion could not only save residents the money they stand to lose when the scammers get a hold of your info, but in this case, also maybe the cost of a new computer.

Mother Nature, abatement efforts keep skeeter populations low

While the mosquito population is currently low during this low-water year, the Owens Valley Mosquito Abatement Program crew is daily treating pastures and lake areas in preparation for the peak August/September mosquito season.
OVMAP Manager Chris Wickham said the crew has been applying larvicides to pasture areas adjacent to Bishop, Big Pine, Lone Pine and Independence as well as in the Owens Lake area near Keeler since March.
“Anywhere we find mosquitoes breeding near human populations is our highest priority,” he said.

Chili pops Unloaded

The well-matched Chili Poppers and Unloaded battled to a 6-6 tie in Friday evening’s City Softball League Coed D division match-up. With one more at-bat, the Poppers stepped up with 3 runs to claim the win in the final day of play before the championship tournament series.
Tournament action for the division starts this Friday at 6 p.m.

While the weather was none too cooperative and the format challenging, the Eastern Sierra Girls Softball Texas-Style One Pitch Tournament, literally, blew through the City Park this past weekend.

Big Pine walk/run results

Luke Shelton, Marie Fitt, Kellen Smith and Janelle Pope took top honors at the Big Pine Fourth of July 10K, 5K, 5K Run/Walk and 5K Youth Run/Walk races, respectively
The traditional holiday celebration is sponsored by the Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department and includes breakfast for the runners and the community and a full-on barbecue feast in the afternoon.
Following Shelton across the finish line in the 10K run were Victor Alcde and Sylvia Pavich.

The Eastern Sierra Barrel Racers held an exciting Buckle Series race June 23 at the Tri-County Fairgrounds.
The club is sponsored by Mr. K Automotive, Holy Smoke BBQ, Manor Market and Reagan’s Outdoors. The next event will be held Saturday, July 27 with sign-ups beginning at 7:30 a.m.

Today is the last chance to sign up for the Lady Broncos basketball team’s One Pitch Softball Tournament scheduled for July 27-28 at City Park. If by today, more teams have not signed up, the tournament will be cancelled. Saturday’s play is round robin with a single-elimination series on Sunday. The team entry fee is $150.
