Comments needed on yellow-legged frog proposal

June 20, 2013

Residents of Inyo County are being asked to get their comments in on a proposed critical habitat designation in the Sierra.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is proposing to designate critical habitat for the yellow-legged frog, the Yosemite toad and the northern population segment of the mountain yellow-legged frog in California.

Films focusing on local water

THURSDAY, JUNE 20, 2013 – Two water-wise documentaries by two different filmmakers are in the works in the Owens Valley.
Jenna Cavelle’s short documentary, “Paya – The Untold Story of the L.A.-Owens Valley Water War,” has met its Kickstarter funding goal and filming is under way with a projected August or early September completion date.
A new project headed up by the Owens Valley Committee and Bristlecone Media, with Cavelle serving as a coproducer, “Slake: Water and Power in the Eastern Sierra,” is in the fundraising stage.

‘Vision or Villainy’ author talks about Austins, L.A.’s celebration

WEDNESDAY, JUNE 19, 2013 – Sometimes it’s best to start at the beginning and finish at the end.
That’s the approach that will be taken by historian and author Dr. Abraham Hoffman when he discusses two critical aspects of the Los Angeles Aqueduct story: The public role played by Mary and Stafford Austin to protest Los Angeles’ land purchases in 1905, and the culmination of the Aqueduct’s construction when Owens River water rushed down the Cascades in 1913.

Remains found in renewed search for missing hiker

June 18, 2013

TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2013 – Inyo County Search and Rescue may be able to close a case it opened last October.
According to Inyo County Sheriff’s Corporal and Search and Rescue Coordinator Terry Waterbury search efforts for Lawrence Conn, 53, of Pacific Palisades, who went missing last fall, resumed this month. Waterbury said some personal effects identified as Conn’s have been located near what are believed to be human remains.
Those remains have been turned over too the Inyo County Coroner’s Office for positive identification.

Fire near Mono City

June 18, 2013

TUESDAY, JUNE 18, 2013 – A five-acre wildfire is burning in the area of Mono City near Lundy Lake, according to the Mono County Sheriff's Department.
Fire personnel "are making good progress in full containment," Sheriff's Department Public Information Officer Jennifer Hansen said, noting there is no current threat to homes in the area of Mono City or Lundy Lake, or to anyone traveling on U.S. 395.

City Council approves promotional video project

MONDAY, JUNE 17, 2013 – A promotional video about the City of Bishop has run into initial criticism for its content – very little about the actual city limits or downtown business district – and its perceived purpose: recruiting new residents who will most likely have to live outside of the city, rather than focusing on tourism.

Salvation Army breaks ground

MONDAY, JUNE 17, 2013 – Eight months after launching a $1 million capital campaign to construct new, local headquarters, the Salvation Army Bishop Corps is inviting the community to a groundbreaking ceremony at the site of its future facility.
The facility, according to the Salvation Army, will consolidate the Corps’ many county-wide social service endeavors and allow for the expansion of its programs that are currently located in cramped, rented storefronts.

The luck of the draw

Friday night's finals of the California High School Rodeo Association offered up maybe a little too much suspense for area residents cheering on locals Kayla Inderbieten and Chase Bowen.
Both made it into the finals after the first two go's, Inderbieten in barrels, Bowen in bareback riding.
The prize at the end of Friday's finals was a trip to the National High School Rodeo Association's Finals held in Wyoming in July. Bowen is going, Inderbieten missed it by 0.135 seconds.

Attempted-murder suspect tracked down in Bishop

FRIDAY, JUNE 14, 2013 – An investigation into an alleged attempted murder Thursday night resulted in the arrest of Chad Smith, 40, of Wilkerson, at a Bishop residence Friday afternoon.
According to the Inyo County Sheriff’s Department, authorities received a report of a domestic dispute with shots fired near Collins Road in Wilkerson at about 10:30 p.m. Thursday.
