Harry LeRoy Whitman
1935-2013

The Lord chose Sunday, March 3, 2013 to quietly and peacefully bring Harry home after a year-long battle with cancer. The Lord had placed Harry on this sod on Feb. 17, 1948 to spend some time raising a beautiful family and doing a few things that God had planned for his life, including two years of service to our country in the U.S. Army.

Darlis Shirley Nakken, age 77 and long time resident of Bishop, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013 at the Renown Medical Center in Reno.
Shirley was born in Grass Valley on Aug. 25, 1935 to Floyd and Dorothy (Lutz) Dorrell and was the oldest of three children. A 59-year marriage began Jan. 17, 1954 when Shirley and John eloped to Reno. They moved to Bishop in 1965.
Shirley enjoyed gardening, was an avid bowler and served as secretary of the Wednesday night bowling league for more than three decades. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Lillian (Jo) Lavell, 72, of Gridley, Calif., passed away on March 11, 2013 in Chico. She was born April 6, 1940 in Loma Linda to Gene and Florence Stockman.

Outside-the-box attitude guides new Bishop eatery

It’s no secret that there will be a big party with nibbles, noshes and music at the grand opening of a local eatery this weekend.
The Secret Sandwich Society owners Kymberlee Nalumaluhia and her husband have joined forces with associates Kate Clarke and Sterling Schat to expand the business to include The Yard Sale Café, a new, sit-down, mid-day eatery in Bishop. Everyone is invited to join the grand opening from 4-7 p.m. this Saturday, March 16 at 124 S. Main St. behind Spellbinder Books.

PD finds link in credit/debit card thefts

Even local law enforcement were not immune to the recent rash of credit-card fraud that reportedly victimized hundreds of Bishop residents through sophisticated cybercrime techniques.
Police Chief Chris Carter said Monday that his bank account had also been illegally accessed by a thief or thieves who had remotely and electronically obtained his credit or debit card number.
According to the chief, he was among as many as 200 local residents whose card numbers had been illegally used.

John Marzano is a man of few words. So few in fact, that in preparation for his retirement from the Big Pine Volunteer Fire Department, information on the man who has been integral to the department had to be cobbled together from those who have known him over the years.
Big Pine is throwing a party for Marzano this Saturday at the high school gym. True to form, Marzano didn’t really want a party for simply doing what had to be done for the past 54 years.
