Sean Gary Morris, 42, passed away at his home in Apple Valley on Dec. 26, 2012 after a long illness. Sean lived in the Owens Valley from 1979‑1987. He attended school in Independence and Bishop. He enjoyed exploring and fishing with his father and brother. He is survived by his loving father, Gary, stepmother, Christine, and, brother, Scott.

Muriel H. Heald of Big Pine passed away at the age of 88 on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2013. She was born April 19, 1924 in Dixon, S.D. to Joseph and Flora Hudson.
Muriel was a longtime resident of the Owens Valley and loved the outdoors. She also enjoyed fishing, camping, hunting, knitting, crocheting, cooking and, above all, bingo.
She was a woman of faith and loved to spend time with her family. She touched the hearts of all those she came in contact with and her legacy will live on in the memories she created.

Daisy Mae Johnson was born May 31, 1921 in Gladstone, Ore. to Lillian Bertha (Moore) Aitken and George Mitchell Aitken. Daisy passed away Sunday, Feb. 3, 2013 in Reno, Nev. She was 91 years of age.
Private burial took place Thursday, Feb. 7, 2013 at the Cambria District Cemetery, Cambria, Calif. A celebration of Daisy’s life will be held at a date and place to be announced.

Born June 31, 1990, 15-year Big Pine resident John Loydd Ericson, Jr., “John-John,” passed away Jan. 31, 2013 in Bishop.
John-John will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He was a devoted and extremely loving father to his son Noah, whom was the light of his life. He lived an active life, loving the outdoors: fishing, hiking and all sports. He gave nothing less than 110 percent in all that he did, and was always there to lend a helping hand whenever needed.

Emergency plans being prepared at local schools

In the aftermath of the Sandy Hook shootings in Newtown, Conn. two months ago, Inyo County school administrators and law enforcement have improved their comfort level in regards to school safety through planned changes to school campuses, a review of existing emergency plans, training and the on-going communication initiated at a school safety meeting held at the Inyo County Office of Education, Jan. 15.
The following is the second in a two-part series covering recent improvements to school safety.

Inyo students recite for honors at Arts Council

Eight young poetry recitalists competed for a chance to represent Inyo County at the state and national levels for a chance to win prestige and substantial monetary prizes.
Bishop, Lone Pine and Owens Valley high school students delved deeply into their intellectual, emotional and public speaking repertoires this past Tuesday at the third annual Inyo County Poetry Out Loud Finals.
Inyo Council of the Arts School Arts Coordinator Liz McAteer emceed the POL event.

$80,000 awarded to community events

Inyo County will be dividing $80,000 among 13 different programs and 7 agencies through the county-funded Community Project Sponsorship Grant program.
Local leaders awarded funds to the Lone Pine, Death Valley and Bishop chambers of commerce, Playhouse 395, the Bishop Museum and Historical Society, the Friends of the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery and the Bishop Mural Society.
