Eastern Sierra residents have an opportunity to make local children’s Christmas wishes come true this year through the Inyo-Mono Advocates for Community Action Wish Tree program.
The Wish Tree program pairs a local resident with a child from a low-income household to ensure that youth in every community from Benton to Olancha don’t have to go without this Christmas.

Leasing begins at Cottonwood Plaza

As construction crews continue renovating Cottonwood Plaza, property managers are getting a jump on advertising for potential tenants.
A sign was recently posted at Cottonwood, located at the intersection of Main and Yaney streets, stating that the shopping center should be open by spring 2014.
The advertisement directs potential lessees to the website www.cottonwoodplaza.com, where interested parties will find lease applications, a site study and market study.

A few days before the Thanksgiving holiday, Sheriff Bill Lutze gave grateful residents and business owners the gift of renewed peace of mind when it comes to protecting their property from theft.
At a meeting of the Lone Pine Chamber of Commerce on Nov. 25, Lutze summarized the types of theft cases being seen in Southern Inyo and offered advice on how to avoid falling victim to thieves.

PD to stop dispatching for Symons Ambulance?

Local leaders are scheduled to meet next week to discuss the future of ambulance services in Bishop following a reported breakdown in negotiations between the Bishop Police Department and Symons Emergency Specialties.
Bishop Police Chief Chris Carter announced Friday that he will be asking the Bishop City Council at its Monday, Dec. 9 meeting to consider discontinuing providing dispatch service to Symons, effective Jan. 1.

Explore the colors of galaxies

Residents and visitors are invited to attend the final broadcast in the Owens Valley Radio Observatory and Cerro Coso Community College’s popular “Explore Your Universe” fall lecture series.
The series, featuring talks by prominent astronomers sharing their research and discoveries, concludes at 7 p.m. this Thursday, Dec. 5, when Dr. Maureen Teyssier presents “The Many Colors of Galaxies.”

Christmas coming to Bishop

This Christmas season, the community of Bishop will be celebrating “Miracles on Main Street” and honoring young cancer survivor Gia Joy Gehringer, who was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer almost exactly one year ago.
Gehringer will serve as grand marshal of this year’s Bishop Christmas Parade and the Salvation Army has planned a candle-light vigil in honor of her and all children suffering from major illnesses at the Bishop Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony this Friday.

Eagles win one, lose one at KV

The Lone Pine Golden Eagles basketball teams got their first test against the Kern Valley Broncs last Tuesday, Nov. 26.
The Eagles pulled out a 60-56 win; the Lady Eagles fell, 58-21.
“We were a little cold in the first half,” said Eagles coach Scott Kemp. Kern led by 4 at the half, but the Eagles came back behind impressive offensive rebounds and put-backs by Brad Greene.
Kemp acknowledged that the Broncs have “a couple of good shooters who made some amazing baskets.” But, when a team only has one shot at the basket, it’s tough to win the game.

Lady Broncos open season against LP

This year’s Bishop Lady Broncos basketball team will make its debut tonight in a home game against the Lone Pine Lady Golden Eagles.
The basketball squad had a landmark year in 2012-13, going deep into the CIF playoffs before losing in the third round. The mental strength of the team was evident in Bishop’s 51-50 win over Bishop Diego.
