Get savvy to cyber safety measures

Twenty years ago, Spam was just a rectangular lump of processed meats sold in a tin. Now when we think of spam, it’s lowercase, referring to all the junk mail we get in our email inboxes. And it’s hardly innocuous; open the wrong spam and your computer can get a virus, or worse, you could find that your checking account has been emptied or your hard drive has been compromised.

Mono man jailed for murder attempt

A Bridgeport man was arrested Tuesday, Nov. 19, on suspicion of attempted murder after he beat and stabbed a Plymouth, Calif., man repeatedly in the head, arms and face, according to the Mono County Sheriff’s Department.
Travis Christian, 27, is currently in custody at the Mono County Jail, pending charges of attempted murder, deputies said.
Christian worked at the Big Mountain Lodge in Bridgeport at the time of the incident, and the incident is believed to be the result of an altercation between Christian and the victim, John Peabody, 66, deputies said.

Help stuff a bus on Saturday

Bishop’s branch of the Salvation Army is kicking off its holiday Kettle Bell drive today at Holy Smoke Barbecue then moving right into the Stuff-a-Bus Food Drive and Coats for Kids drive at the Vons/Kmart parking lot Saturday morning.
Teaming up with the Eastern Sierra Transit Authority and several local businesses, the Salvation Army is hoping to generate enough donations to ensure that families in need do not have to go without hot food or warm clothes this winter.

Is a greener Big Pine in Inyo County’s future?

The landscape of Big Pine’s enhancement mitigation projects has changed significantly in the past six weeks. A leased property cited as a fire and then a dust hazard has been cleared and fenced; the community’s 30-acre regreening site northeast of the town is being prepped and a well southeast of the Big Pine Paiute Reservation will be switched on for a few weeks a year to compensate for water used on those acres.

Lone Pine Golden Eagles ready for a strong 2013-14 season

Scott Kemp is a happy man.
The Lone Pine basketball coach was probably described as “happy” at this time last year. He had a troupe of freshmen, all more than 6 feet tall, a couple of juniors with speed and ability and the veteran senior Michael Cappello who went on to claim a Desert Mountain League MVP spot. The Golden Eagles went deep into CIF playoffs, finally falling in the quarterfinals to the eventual division champion, Rio Hondo Hares.

Carol Ann Worabel

Carol was a simple woman who lived a simple life, and was a genuine friend to all.
She is survived by her husband, Steve; daughter, Sunny; son, Tim; and grandchildren, Roman, Danny, Josh, Jeff, Jetta, Summer and Shanae. Also her lovely animals, dog, Jitterbug and bird, Lieko.
“Hootsie’s” best of times were in the Eastern Sierra, where she worked at Brown’s Town with the Brown’s family. She loved walking her dog QP along Pole Line Road.

Lois Emma (Lloyd) Pahlow

Lois Emma Lloyd was born Jan. 11, 1933 in Glassport, Penn. to William and May Lloyd. She moved with her parents to Fontana in 1946 and then to Van Nuys in 1947, where she attended Van Nuys High School and met her future husband Robert G. Pahlow. They were married on Nov. 25, 1950 in Las Vegas.
Lois worked for Pacific Telephone in the San Fernando Valley for 19 years and then she and her husband moved to Bishop, where they lived for 18 years. While living in Bishop she worked for Continental Telephone and the City of Bishop.

Gail entered eternal peace Friday, Nov. 15, 2013. Gail was born May 24, 1952 to Alexander and Geraldine David in San Carlos, Ariz. She leaves her memories to be cherished by her father, Alexander David; beloved sisters, Beverly David, Jean Bengochia, Charlotte David, Ruth David and Margorie David; brother, Daniel David, her three daughters, Beverly Havel, Mavis Lambright and Victoria WhiteBear; as well as her six adoring grandchildren and numerous family and friends.

Three arrested for early morning smash-and-grabs

Steve Klassen’s brand new Wave Rave outlet store in Bishop hasn’t even opened for business yet but that didn’t stop a trio of residents from allegedly breaking in Sunday and stealing merchandise, according to police.
The Bishop residents were arrested not long after the late-night/early-morning break-in after police literally followed a trail of clues to the residence in which they were hiding.

This Wednesday is National Geographic Information Services Day and Inyo County is inviting the community to learn about real-world applications of GIS and how it is being used locally.
Inyo County will host a GIS Day event from 2-6 p.m. Wednesday in the Board of Supervisors Room in the County Administrative Center.
