Inyo supports aqueduct mule train

One hundred mules traveling from the Owens Valley to Los Angeles to raise awareness about where the city’s water comes from is more than just a spectacle for Owens Valley residents.
Ask those involved in helping to send the mules on their way, the dozens who gathered last week to give the procession a proper send-off or the hundreds of locals who have been tracking the mule trip via social media, and they’ll tell you it has deeper meaning in a landscape impacted by the export of local water.

County project generates savings

The bright sunshine in Independence last Tuesday matched the sunny financial projections for Inyo County’s recently completed $2 million solar project which includes three separate arrays of photovoltaic solar panels that are capable of generating 430 kilowatts of electricity.

Bishop goes 1-0 in league

The Bishop Broncos enjoyed a much-needed football victory against their opponent, the Ravens, beneath the windless evening sky in Cal City.
The first half kick off put the Broncos deep in their own territory at the 9-yard line. The team advanced the ball a short distance up field before the Ravens took over on Bishop’s 28 off an errant snap on the punt.

Another sweep for the Lady Warriors

The Big Pine Lady Warriors hosted Lee Vining Thursday and sent the Tigers’ volleyball squad back up the hill with a 3-0 sweep.
In game one Melissa Barlow executed a kill, putting Sienna Gutierrez at the service line. The score was 3-2 and Gutierrez went on a 6-point run.
Lee Vining couldn’t close the gap after Gutierrez’s serve, only getting a couple of point breaks from Mackenzie Kendall and Marie Lightner. Big Pine’s Anah-Kee Mason and Gena Lewis had multi-point runs at the line. Mason ran up 5 service points and Lewis added 6. The final score in game one: 25-11

Bishop repeats in tennis

The Bishop Lady Broncos tennis team claimed the High Desert League championship with a 13-5 win over the Kern Valley Broncs Thursday.
In singles’ action, Laura Rossy won 6-0, 6-1, with one 4-6 loss. Gabby Morales swept at 6-3, 6-0, 6-0.
“Kerisa (Isaac) had a great match against Kern’s number three seed,” said coach Patty Cummings. Isaac won, 6-3, but lost the next two 0-6, 1-6.

Joan Elizabeth Patterson

Joan Elizabeth Patterson, 97, of Bishop, passed away at Northern Inyo Hospital in Bishop on Sept. 27, 2013. She was born on Nov. 28, 1915 in Lisse, Holland and with her family came to the United States at Ellis Island, N.Y., in 1920.

Darlene Rose Salas (Kennedy)

Darlene Rose Salas (Kennedy), 68, born in Oasis to the late Margaret Ruth Shaw and Herbert Kennedy. Darlene lived in Bishop for most of her life. She worked at the Bishop laundry for 16 years as a delivery bundler. She then worked for both the Texaco and Mobile gas stations in town for several years, before working at the Paiute Palace Casino, as assistant cage manager. Darlene worked at the Casino for more than 18 years.

Kathy Henderson, beloved wife, mother, friend and civic leader, passed away at Renown Medical Center in Reno on Oct. 13, 2013 surrounded by family. Kathy was a born-again Christian who loved her family and Savior, Jesus Christ.

Deanna Johnson-LeGassick

Deanna Johnson, 70, died Oct. 10, 2013, after a long a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born and raised in Arcadia.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Dean Iles Bowler and Joan Becker Bowler; and her brother, Jimmy.
She is survived by her children, Chris Johnson and Paige Johnson-O’Donnell; her grandchildren, Mary and Grace Johnson and Riley and Gregory O’Donnell; her loving husband, Richard LeGassick; and many LeGassick stepchildren and grandchildren.
