At Mondayâs fifth meeting of the Big Pine Fire Safe Council, residents learned just how close the bullet the community dodged on Saturday, July 7 actually came.
The large turnout, perhaps spurred on by two consecutive Saturdays of brush fires in or near the town, also began to come together with the first small steps in protecting themselves and their homes from the constant threat of wildland fires.
Citizens in Independence are rallying to save what theyâre calling one of the best â and only â summer youth programs in their community.
On Tuesday evening at the Kids Club in Independence, a dozen local, concerned parents and community members met with Healthy Communities Board President Jaque Hickman and Vice President Lis Mazzu to discuss fundraising efforts to keep the club, which is located on the campus of the Owen Valley School, open for local youth.
The Kids Club offers afterschool homework assistance, supervised play and healthy snacks for local, school-aged youth.

County leaders may be revisiting the criteria they previously established for the award of Inyoâs Community Project Sponsorship Grant Program.
During a discussion about how to dole out $20,000 among 11 applicants, First District Supervisor Linda Arcularius, who helped set the grant funding guidelines, said she was confused about why a three-person review panel chose which projects to fund.
Inyo County Museum Services Director Jon Klusmire, who administers the grant program for the county, said a total of $59,360 was requested for the $20,000 grant cycle.

Even Inyo Countyâs Grand Jury, which is charged with investigating âwillful or corrupt misconduct in office,â couldnât get an answer out of District Attorney Art Maillet as to why his office released inappropriate information about his political opponent back in 2010.
According to the 2011-12 Grand Jury Final Report, Maillet declined to answer any questions on the matter, citing private personnel matters in his public office.

July 30 will be Dr. Carl Lindâs last day at Bishop Veterinary Hospital.
His plans for the future reflect the man close friends like Craig London know. Heâs going to watch his grandsons play Bronco football, help kids learn to read and, with his wife Carol, travel with Alaska, Canada and New Orleans high on the itinerary.

In response to citizen concerns, the 2011-12 Inyo County Grand Jury took a closer look at the process for appointing or electing citizen representation to the more than 30 Special Districts in Inyo County.
In its Final Report, the jury offered tips to County Clerk-Recorder Kammi Foote on how to improve the election and appointment process in regards to Special Districts. Foote, in her response, said she was only partially responsible for some of the recommendations the Grand Jury made and has already implemented some of their suggestions.
