Altrusa, Inyo County First 5, Inyo-Mono Master Gardeners, Owens Valley Edible Gardens, Inyo-Mono Advocates for Community Action and 20 Clarke Street Head Start preschoolers christened a new multi-purpose childrenâs garden Tuesday, June 5.
Not long after their teacher, Robin Murray, helped the youngsters cut a flowered-garland âribbonâ with large pruning sheers did they scamper off into their produce garden to pick strawberries.
Mervin J. Sam
1963-2012
Mervin Sam, 48, a former longtime resident of the Owens Valley, passed away on May 30, 2012 in Reno, Nev. at Renown Hospital with his family at his side.
Kenney Scruggs
1949-2012
Kenney Scruggs, the Bishop attorney and civic activist who became a voice in court for children trapped in their parents’ custody battles, has died after a struggle with cancer. She was 62.
Scruggs worked tirelessly on criminal and domestic cases, and often took on unpopular clients and cases without concern for the personal consequences. Her friends and relatives will remember her best for her personal devotion to loved ones who needed her.
Jeffrey Clifton Paco, Sr.
1964-2012
Jeffrey Clifton Paco, Sr. beloved husband, father, son and grandpa, was born Aug. 25, 1964 to Jess Robert Paco Sr. and Virginia Jelinek.
He married Maria Elaine Vega on Aug. 25, 1985.

Bishop AYSO teams recorded wins at both the Toiyabe League and tournament levels last weekend to end their Spring Select soccer season.
The eight-week season culminated at the Toiyabe Tournament, June 2-3 at Edmonds Sports Complex in Carson City, Nev.
The two Bishop Under-10 girls teams finished one-two in league with coach Eric Tillemansâ team taking first with 27 points over coach Winzenreadâs team with 25 points.
Coach Chuy Gonzalesâ U10 boys team finished third in league play.

The Bishop Nursery Ghost Peppers crept past the Reds in Division C of the Bishop Adult Softball League action Tuesday night.
The division leader, Bad Company, wasnât as lucky with a 1-17 loss to the BSers.
The Reds jumped out to a 0-4 lead in the top of the first. Taylor Neubauer scored the first run off a double from Earl Lent.
With two runners on and 2 outs, Darren Spoonhunter slammed an in-the-park home run to the fenceline to bring in 3 runs for the 0-4 lead.
The Peppers got off to a slow start in the bottom of the inning.

When Bishop California Highway Patrol Public Information Officer Dennis Cleland asked the Lone Pine High School student body IMPACT Teen Drivers assembly audience, âWhat is lethal,â they called out answers like: driving under the influence, using a cell phone, texting, driving with both ear phones in, drugs, no seat belts and even eating. Cleland commented on that last one. âYes, thatâs the deadliest restaurant.â
With major decisions to be made in regards to the Mt. Whitney Fish Hatchery, the Sierra Nevada Conservancy has scheduled a busy week that includes a tour of the facility outside of Independence, the award of nearly $5 million in grants and a reception.
